From the Databank Transcription Team site:

Song description:

"This song was originally recorded during the sessions which produced the Emancipation 3-CD album. The production and drum programming are typical of songs recorded from that era. This composition, however, is an unusually plaintive love song for 1995/6, in which Prince refuses to offer commitment for fear of having his hopes dashed and heart broken. Equally, he cannot face the frustration of mere friendship with someone whose love he craves. Ultimately, he recognizes that the relationship is doomed, the 'dance' he leads will be a lonely one, and the song closes with him asking his potential lover to leave. Musically, the song's mournful tone and pace matches the sorrowful subject matter. The recording was released as a download on March 29, 2004 as part of the Chocolate Invasion download album, which largely comprised songs previously made available through the NPGMC (albeit some tracks had minor variations). "The Dance" was the only song that had previously not been released."

The Dance

I don't wanna give U my love
Cuz I don't wanna lose my mind
I don't wanna give U my love
Cuz if I do it's gonna be the last time

I never want 2 feel this way again
If I can't be your lover, I don't wanna be your friend, no
I don't wanna be friends, no

I don't wanna hold your hand (I don't wanna hold your hand)
Uh uh, cuz I just wanna follow U everywhere, sho'nuff
I don't wanna see U dance, no, no (No)
I don't even really want 2 take the chance (Cuz I don't even...)
Of fallin' in love with U baby

Cuz if U ever said beautiful words 2 me
If I wanna be your fantasy, yes
I wanna dance, yes

Ooh, baby
I don't wanna give U my love

I don't wanna go 2 fast
Cuz if I do U just might stay (Will U stay with me, baby?)
U just might stay
I guess I have a lonely dance (Lonely dance)
The longer that I feel this way (The longer that I feel this way)
And I never want 2 feel this way again (I never wanna feel)
If I can't be your lover
I don't wanna be your friend (I can't be just friends)
No {repeated}
I don't wanna be friends, no
No {repeated}
I just want this 2 end
My my my... baby, oh yeah

I don't wanna give U my love (I don't wanna give U my love)
Cuz I don't wanna lose my mind (Just might lose, lose, lose my mind)

Go home, baby
U know U can't handle this

Wow, I didn't know the song goes back to 1995-1996. More proof as to how cool this man is. I love this song and I always wonder how the rest of the world would like this, inclding the kids cause I could see them really liking this one

I've always wondered if there is any 'proof' that this dates back to 1995-1996 - or are people just basing this on the production, which sounds like the Emancipation era?

I don't know where the DT team got their infor above but it reads as if they know. The only "official" mention of this track on the NPGMC site is as follows:

New track. Came out of nowhere and found it's way here. How many times have we heard "Eye wish they would re-release some of that old stuff and just stick like ONE new track on there 2 make it fresh"?

Doesn't give much away and "new" track could mean anything.
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

For what it is worth, "The Dance" is reported in Uptown's, 'The Vault' as being an Emancipation-era track. I can't see that it had been identified as an unreleased 1995-6 session track in 'The Vault's' predecessor, 'Turn It Up 2.0'.

Is it still possible to find "The Dance" to download on NPGMC?

I believe the idea of it being from the emacipation era came from a moderators response to some questions over at the npgmc boards. As I remember they said it was an older track and sometimes placing it with newer trax gave it a fresh new sound!

Man I would love to hear that because from the lyrics its seems like it would be pretty good. Does anyone know how I could still come up with it?

It's still on the NPGMC in the Musicology section. You don't have to be a member to download the CD or songs. It's on The Chocolate Invasion and I think it's a great CD, even if it's a collection of songs. I happen to like this a little more than Musicology. Check it out if you can.

It's one of my favourite songs! Altho i didnt used to like it at first. And it certainly does sound like it could have been on emancipation.

I love this tune, i've been playing it on repeat for the past few weeks! This should have been on Emancipation - making it a grand total of 6 songs that I like from the 3 disc epic!
