Prince,Jesse Johnson and Ready For The World

Can some one out there help me out? I was listening 2 Ready For The World 2nite and remembered seeing them on SoulTrain twice. In one of the interviews they made mention of the fact that Jesse and Prince helped them with there 1st album. What's the deal, how did they hook up? Who knows what? Didn't someone post some info on RFTW about Prince dogging them out or something like that. I tried doing a search but that doesn't work. Thanx!

Yeah, but it was only Jesse. Jesse helped them with their Jheri Curls.

I've never heard of Ready For The World having any dealings with Prince or Jesse. Maybe they meant that they influenced their sound.

nope, they never collaborated on anything. the only thing ready for the curl had for 'em is that they were able to emulate the minneapolis sound well, and that's all.

Also, Prince wrote Lady Cab Driver, unintentionally writing R4TW's biggest hit Oh Sheila in the same process.

In 1986,Black Beat magazine reported that the guys in RFTW came backstage to meet Prince after one of his concerts. He reportedly shunned them, and didn't say one word to them. This is the only Prince/RFTW connection that I have heard of.He certainly didn't have anything to do with their albums.

Exactly. P or Jessie didn't have anyting to do with RFTW. Obviously, they influenced their sound and image. Especially Jessie.

I don't know what P's problem is with other artists. He has done that to soooo many artists. It's always made him look very insecure and shit. As many other artists that P has biten off of..Negro please. You've got your nerve. With RFTW, he should have been like, "Hey ya'll. Nice to meet u. Dig your album. Good work. I see ya'll have great taste!" Or some shit like that. No skin off of his back.

Can u imagine if P met James, Jimi or Sly and he wanted to shake their hand and they said some shit like "Man, take your copying, short, sissy looking ass on away from here before you get jumped on." P's feelings would have been crushed.

Sheila E once said that when she first heard "Oh Sheila" on the radio, She thought Prince had written it for her. Other then that, anyone can tell that RFTW had Prince's sound all over their record. The lead singer makes a weak attempt to talk like Prince on "Oh Sheila" when he says "Well Honey Baby Just You Wait And See". But you're right, there's no help from Jesse Or Prince on their record. PS. Does anyone remember the drummer with the jheri curl that stretched from his forehead to his chin?

For all we know it did happen to Prince. Up until 1999 (the album) the argument that he was in the same shoes as RFTW could be made but once 1999 and Purple Rain came out Sly and them wouldn't have nothing to say like that. By then Prince knew he was in their league. Hell, he didn't really start the outright tributes until pretty recently, Sexy MF notwithstanding.

Ready for The World made the mistake of trying to make their name on somebody else's sound. That doesn't excuse Prince for his behavior though. He's lucky he's never been down and out with all of the bridges he's seemingly burnt.

I don't think I've ever heard of Prince being star struck by anyone. I remember some kind of story where Prince was taken to Carlos Santana's house early in his career by some exec. He was asked to take his shoes off and he just said 'no' and left. hahahah!

So what if Prince doesn't acknowledge other artists. Do they give him 'Props 'N Pounds'? I remember an article back in 1990 when Prince did Rio for MTV and at that time Guns 'N Roses was the shit. Prince and his new band The New Power Generation walked 2 the stage in a single file line and completely ignored Guns 'N Roses and Slash was so mad that he started calling Prince names. "U don't have 2 watch Dynasty 2 have an attitude". I also read he shunned Elizabeth Taylor 2. I can C him doing these things and I love it!!!!! Let's remember how he played the We Are The People posse (HELLO). I love his attitude

Prince is very competitive and arrogant at times like many other talented people. His attitude has gotten much better, but make no mistake, he is an arrogant and somewhat selfish person at times - but damn - the man is talented. Expect him to loosen up (as he is starting to do) as he gets even older.
