Depends. I wish he was still playing his back catalogue. It would be so cool to hear a versions Head et al without the religisising (is that a word? it is now!) and "parental guidance approved". Basically it would be cool to hear him "bullshit" when everyone claims to have heard about the quake, "masturbate with a magazine" when he sings about a girl he met, enjoy however many positions a one night stand can throw up.

Basically I want Prince to sing his songs and not have one eye on the afterlife. I mean, is God really going to be offended by the odd "motherfucker" or two? And if he is is he going to let Prince off for only having used such language during his formative years?

It would be so energising to know you were walking into a Prince concert and all the cards were on the table, all the songs could be played, not just the ones that the potty-mouth-o-meter had registered clear for performance.

U have hit the nail on the head, i am not 2 unhappy if he dont swear on anything new ..... i qoute "4 letter words will not be heard up upon this stage 2nite" from the fantastic live version of Joy in Repetition but i would love him not 2 mess about with his old lyrics wink

Where did U hear the Live version of "Joy In Repetition"? I love that song!!

fuck yeah, when he replaces words with other words it sounds stupid, he did that on The Rainbow Children, "we dont give a duck"?, 'answer me motherfucker!" mad

I agree.
If He doesn't wanna curse than why use this phrase??
I don't think he has 2 use the words bitch,mf,etc
allt he time but sometimes it adds something 2 the songs.

And I hate it 2 hear Prince sing something like:
"...shale your pants"
PLEASE...he was the king of the sugestive lyrics,
just use the word ASS!!!!!

I mean, don't you just wish he would say "Fuck" every now and again? Didn't some of his most wonderful, lurid and sensational lyrics contain profanity? Darling..., ...Married, Head, Gett Off, Dirty Mind to name a few. Don't you want him to 'sincerely fuck the taste out of your mouth' just one more time?

Let's start a compaign:
Prince, start swearing again. God will forgive you. He knows you are a good man at heart, don't let the transient surface forbid your true inclination to the curse!

nod I'm with ya. I loved it when he talked dirty. sexy

The "Love the cursing" hook was just a glib way to start this thread. Swearing just for the badness of it all is not what I'm championing. I just wish Prince would be true to his original body of work... it is what made him after all, it is what made us turn on to him and support him by purchasing his work. If it didn't work, if it didn't speak to an audience, then fine; but we were intrigued by the "rude boy", the songs about sexual revelation and experimentation, the a-political stance and honest religiosity of Prince's early work.

...

Hell. All I'm saying is that I wish Prince would play all his songs the way God intended... in the original form, the form they were created and successful in.

I don't think he did... The song "Mr Man" appears to be directed at/about George W... so that's nearly cursing... but swear words were missing on this CD.

HOWEVER...

Whilst he wasn't swearing on Musicology he was having a dig at Missy Elliot, whish is a little odd... swearing=bad, God will punish you, having a go at a person who has struggled to control their weight=OK... weird.

It all reminds me of Meatloaf who had a song where he was singing

'Sex and DRUMS and Rock 'n Roll' disbelief * 10

I found it and still find it very corny. Why use this phrase in your song and then later change the phrase because you might offend somebody? (the concept of making a 'raw' rock-album for the whole family)

Now Prince is doing the same. 'We don't give a duck' Thats just corny. Why use the phrase and then alter it?

I also think it's misplaced religious piety. I think it's rather ridicoulous changing your own lyrics and censoring yourself (at the age of 47), while you used to sing the songs differently your whole career.

There was a time that I may have said that I missed it but then i read the title of this post and it just struck me as so incredibly juvenile. Mostly young people that are products of today's rude hip hop generation would actually see value in profanity beyond its youthful applications steeped in naive perceptions of what is truly cool.

Prince said he did it when no one else was and it was cool. Now everyone does it - even cartoons and "family" TV programming - so it is no longer cool. Thus Prince doesnt do it anymore because Prince has always been cool.

I'm NOT today's youth but I grew up with a Prince
who was one of the first who didn't give a FUCK about
what people said about his lyrics.
He doesn't have 2 swear but duck or pants is not
cool and something U don't expect from Prince.
Luther Vandross maybe lol

Sonofblade you are right. The title of the thread is juvenile, I've already written here that it was a glib title that may attract people in. The point of the thread is that Prince is selling us short. As a fan of many years I can say with hand on heart that these touched-up, cleaned-up, Gore-friendly versions of songs I loved and grew up with is annoying.

Swearing is not cool. Sometimes it is, however, a true reflection of the intensity and emotion of a moment. Many such moments exist in Prince's back catalogue. He is now denying us these moments. And why? Well, I can't tell quite why. Something to do with religion, something to do with already having pushed the envelope off the table. Fine. But remember how your audience bought into you when you weren't even pushing the envelope, merely sealing it and writing SWALK on the back... that's L for lascivious... This Prince feels phoney to me, but that's just my thoughts, they're not right or wrong just there.
