The Old Pistol Shaped Microphone. Love it or hate it? I didn't care for it. Too much of a distraction. It just looked funny to me. Thoughts anyone?

I don't care for it. Prince went from scattering flower petals to toting a gun shaped mike.
I'm a purple hippy. I wish he'd have stuck with the flower petals. I'm firmly planted in denial

I thought that under the circumstances (those being his absurdly embarrasing attempt at hip-hop) the 'shooting lyrics' with his mic/gun....idea was the only thing that HADN'T been done before in hip-hop.....(well that and high heel shoes) 'Love will be your Soldier' - Nikka Costa

Actually, I thought it was real cool. To explain: Back in the day, I use to hate Prince. HATE prince (this was back in the 80s, Purple Rain, ATWIAD era). I was into metal and thrash and such. Now, considering all those hair bands, thrash/death bands and such from that era did not even have something as the Pistol mike, I say it's cool.
(Nowadays, I've seen the light and of course LOVE Prince big time. And yes, I still like the punk/metal/hardcore from time to time. Grow up? NEVER!) It's alright, It's okay, Jesus Told Me So.

Yeah, I liked it. It's always kinda glam when he rocks the pistol microphone. He still used it during the "Musicology" tour. "New Power slide...."

Hi @ all,-
this pistol shaped Micro has a "comeback" in a spot 4 the German TV Station Pro 7. Pro 7's man Stefan Raab holds it, while another Comedian (Bully) holds a camera like a pistol, both act in the Pro 7 commercial in a James Bond 007 way ... J.S. PRINCE WROTE THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE.

I like it! I think its very cool. "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

It's just a microphone. It was kinda tacky.

I liked it. I can't think of anyone else who had one. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I thought it was both cool and strange and I guess it was an attempt for him to say that "I speak directly 4 the people, not the money"! I wonder what happened when he pulled the trigger of the mic gun, does anyone knows? [Edited 10/11/05 14:57pm] Check me out and add me on:

He used it to look more gangsta; this was the time of the big rap popularity boom. Prince thought it made him look badass, when it just made him look like everyone else. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Not bad enough to bother me, but it's kinda tacky and corny. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

he always had held his mike like a gun. if you look at most other performers they just have the microphone. With Prince from the beginning he always had the mic with the clip that holds it on the stand still attached to it. so the mic was a natural progression in my mind. I've never shared a personal relationship with any of his microphones so I can't possible describe my sentiments over them. I dunno, "love" or "hate" are a bit too strong expression used to describe how I feel about a stage prop.
Having said that I really hate the Diamonds & Pearls stage-set.

I'm a purple hippy. I wish he'd have stuck with the flower petals. I like petals too. Guns symbolize deformation, destruction, and death. [Edited 10/12/05 10:35am]

I dig it. I thought Prince looked cool with the mic cause no one else had or still has one. Only Prince could get away with that sort of thing. [Edited 10/12/05 11:41am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

It seems that every musical instrument that he used/uses to the fore has been custom made for him. The Cloud/C-Model/Symbol. The One-Eyed Bass. The Purpleaxxe thingy. The Pistolgrip Mike.
Cool show, methinks. It all goes with it! Schöne Grüße "Whatever skin we're in

Never understood. It was in a period that Prince was behaving very macho, with the gun-mic, walking stick and his macho-buddies Sonny T. and Tony M. Look at the Sexy MF video and you know what I mean. In his early years as an a performer, Prince also showed his fascination for guns. Wasn't there a gun-scene in the Controversy liveshows? At the same time he is singing a song like Annie Christian, a fierce protest against gun violence.
Couple of years later he is singing 'Love Sign' as a protest against the weapon-cultus. I sometimes can't follow the idea's that he showcases, and the way he changes his idea's very radically. Or is it called 'controversial' behaviour??? jazzz.
