Which producer would do Prince right??

There's a Belgian rock journalist who has had the
opportunity 2 meet Prince a few times,he admirres his
work and has done almost every revieuw from each P-album.
He also kept on telling people 2 buy the B-sides because
he thought they were phenomonal.
And he's not scared 2 just tell it like it is,
I mean,if an album isn't that great he will tell U.
He also mentions that some of Prince lesser songs could still
be pearls 4 a lot of other artists.
Musicology was a great step 4ward but just good enough
4 an artist wich such a great carreer.

Every album released since NPS he says that Prince should
try a producer/co-producer.
Not that his production/sound is not good(TGE got
great critics 4 it's production/arrangements)but he could
use someone who just has the guts 2 tell Prince:
man, this and that song don't work, write another one!

IMO this would do any harm, what concurns the sound of Musicology,
I think it sounds a bit dull,it sounds dry not wet..if
U know what I mean wink

I think André 3000 or The Neptunes would do a great job,
they could really push Prince into making a solid album.

When Puffy was hot a couple years back,I also wondered what
that would sound like, just 4 the fun of it!!(and NOT a whole album!)

I would say Wendy Melvoin (for a purple record)

or

Bootsy (for a funk record)

or am I thinking too old-school??

I don't know if this would make a good team...but Glen Ballard can usually produce a great record.

Whenever this question comes up, it's always The Neptunes that get a mention.

I dunno why people want Prince sounding like Britney Spears, Kelis, or Justin Timberlake.

It might get him a hit single or two, but is that what you're really looking for when you get a new Prince record?

I'm just looking for great music, whether it's a hit or not is completely irrelevant, certainly in this day and age when the commercial music industry, is just that, a commercial industry. A hit single means zip these days.

Maybe Prince should need some sort of executive producer with a good (and maybe contemporary) taste, who will ask Prince for 50 songs and then select 10 or 12 to include on the record.
In this way Prince isn't hindered in the creative process, but at least there is a second opinion to control the overall quality and consistancy of the final product.

Well, quite.

Is it that he's protective of his music, or he doesn't trust anyone else with it? Prince and control, Prince and control.....

I sure would love to hear Prince's music as shaped by a producer like Nellee Hooper.

No,but I got 2 admit I do like
what Pharrel did with some of the songs on
Justified. At first I didn't even wanna listen 2 the album-
Justin Timberlake from that boysband..get out!!-but
U know songs like 'Like I love U' & 'Cry me a river'
aren't that bad,no comparison 2 Britney and others.

I don't think anyone younger and less experienced should produce Prince. They would only be trying to teach an old dog a new trick that the old dog taught them years ago.

I would be interested to see what someone like Glen Ballard would do with Prince, or even Rick Rubin. Just someone who's completely different in their approach. Prince doesn't need someone who's supposedly funky; Prince is already funky. I would want to pair him with someone who could change his perspective completely. Something similar to the Jack White/Loretta Lynn dynamic, but not a really young person. Remember Prince is approaching 50; he doesn't need to sound like he's 25.

yo be totally honest no producer could do his music right because he has such a unique style, he's better off doing his own music.

Great idea, something like Kanye West did.
I read he took a producer who isn't into hiphop
and by doing that it gives the music something more
than just that hiphop sound.

i think he should retain production of vocals and rhythmic emphasis (the groove going on) but instrumentation and arrangement could be given a fresh perspective by someone else, and maybe give shine to a traditionally raw sounding production (something he could have done with on... guess what..Emancipation, and less so on Rave). Is it pride or staying true to delivering a truly prince album(what you hear is mainly his creation)?

No one really. He's prefectly capable of doing that himself, however what he needs are people around him who can inspire him and be brutally honst when necessary.

Gawd, my choice is SO ace no one recognises it's brilliance.

How many of you's KNOW Nellee Hooper? WHy is everybody going with the boring obvious choices? I'd rather hear a new side to Prince then another spin on his 'blackness' (or should I say 'funkiness'?)

I would turn his sound inside out and then spin it til we can funk on whatever he never did before.

How bout ?uestlove ?

I like the sound of Raphael Saadiq though sometimes his productions are a bit too polished for P (in my opinion).

Would love to hear Rick Rubin, i love his attitude of bringing out the best of an artist. He doesn't stamp his sound onto them.

In a similar way I understand that Paul McCartney had Nigel Godrich (sp?) produce his last. Not heard it but read it was a successful venture - more to freshen his sound rather than reshape it. (im not suggesting him for P, just the kinda attitude i'd like to see an outside producer take)

While I can see why Neptunes and Andre 3000 would be obvious choices, i think it would be too clearly an album produced by them. Their sounds are too distinct.

I thought about ?uestlove for a sec. But he is probably too big a fan and would make Prince run all over him, heheeh.

Rick Rubin is an excelent choice, as is Godrich, who worked wonders on Macca indeed. But just acoustic is probably boring to Prince and he hasn't got the new material to make it interesting, The Truth proves that.

Prince's mind is probably too muddled with noise, as it seems he cannot turn out a straight forward song that just sits nicely on one's mind when hearing it. It's all about hooks and deedled and ladida's and the lyrics most of the tiume suck.

Neptunes and such are all prince derivative, so that won't work. Really now, what's better, housequake or Holla Back girl?
