Purple Rain Extended Edition

My bro in law axed me to burn PR for him cos he's just heard I Would Die 4 U for the first time and likes it alot.
I don't like wasting space on a cd and as we know PR is less than 45 mins long. So I've decided to do an extended edition and put in all the PR era B-Sides from How Come? to She's Always and finish it off with A Love Bizzare since that other classic Sheila E. collaberation, Erotic City, is included. I don't have such unreleased gems as Electric Intercourse and Computer Blue long version nor do I have access to extended versions of Let's Go Crazy etc. So I was wondering what sort of an Extended Edition you experts can come up with. Remember it all has to fit on an 80 minute cd.
I do realise I'm including 1999 B-Sides and one from ATWIAD but he did play them at the PR concerts and that Raspberry Beret B-Side has the right sound and is just too hot to leave out and we are trying to atract more fans aren't we.
Here's my version:

Purple Rain Extended Edition

1. Let's Go Crazy
2. Take Me With U
3. The Beautiful Ones
4. Computer Blue
5. Darling Nikki
6. When Doves Cry
7. I Would Die 4 U
8. Baby I'm a Star
9. Purple Rain
10. How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?
11. Horny Toad
12. Irresistible Bitch
13. 17 Days
14. Erotic City
15. God
16. Another Lonely Christmas
17. She's Always in My Hair
18. A Love Bizzare

17. She's Always in My Hair
18. A Love Bizzare

How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore & Horny Toad were recorded more around the 1999 sessions, back in 1982.
If i remember well, A Love Bizarre was recorded months after PR was released & don't fit at all with the other, dark, songs u've selected or that r on PR.
From their recording date (1983), Irresistible Bitch & She's Always In My Hair could actually have been PR songs, though i don't think they would have fit.
17 Days was originally an Apollonia 6 song so it's OK too.
God was a PR outtake, but the instrumental version is better than the vocal one & would have fit better.
I think that Another Lonely Christmas & Erotic City were recorded after the PR sessions but b4 the album was released, as well as When Doves Cry & Take Me With U, so i guess their inclusion is OK, too.

Ok you nitpickers lets have your tracklistings. I decided to throw in those 1999 B-sides cos I remember them being played along with Possessed at Syracuse '85 when it was aired live on Super Channel just when I was starting to become a Prince subject. How ignorant was I at the time, when they started When Doves Cry I said to myself hmmm this one sounds familiar.

Yes, & that's why How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore should also have been included on either ONA or The Rainbow Children since it was played on ONA Live

& what about including She's always in my hair on Rave since he played it on Rave Un2 The Years 2000?

lol

Ha Ha, stop reading those DC comics. By the way the only French so called super hero I can think of is Batroc ze Leaper. He's a baddie and the only episode I can think of with him is an ad for twinkies. At least we have Sean Cassidey AKA Banshee and his daughter or neice or whatever she is from the X-Men.

I would strongly suggest adding "The Bird" "Jungle Love" "Sex Shooter" and "Moderaire" and I would also make it a mission to find the 12 inch versions of "Let's Go Crazy" and "I would Die 4 U" and also include both versions of "God" along with taking off the stuff already mentioned that doesn't fit the era.

When I put together my version of PR-extended, it took up 2 CDs, and I still had to edit some things out. "Purple Rain," "God (instrumental)," "Computer Blue (complete)," and all the B-sides and extended remixes take up a lot of room. I'd leave out "I Would Die 4 U (extended)" and keep the short version to give yourself more room to work with. I'd also replace some of the album versions with the slightly longer extended versions ("The Beautiful Ones," "Darling Nikki," etc) just to make it interesting. Maybe add in a good rehearsal version of "When Doves Cry." And don't forget "Electric Intercourse" and maybe Prince's version of "The Dance Electric" after "God (vocal)." Definitely get rid of the pre and post PR stuff. Keep it real. Have fun!

The Dance Electric is a fabulous track. But why would that be included. Was it proposed for inclusion on the Album?

ok so effort no. 2 (as a concept, I can't burn this sucker)

1. Let's Go Crazy (Extended Version)
2. The Bird
3. Take Me With U (Album Version)
4. Modernaire
5. The Beautiful Ones (Album Version)
6. Computer Blue (Complete Version)
7. Darling Nikki (Album Version)
8. Sex Shooter
9. When Doves Cry (Album Version)
10. Jungle Love
11. Purple Rain (Album Version)
12. I Would Die 4 U (Extended Version)
13. Baby, I'm a Star (Album Version)
14. 17 Days
15. Erotic City
16. God
17. Another Lonely Christmas

ok so I'm trying to put them in the order they appeared on the movie but its pretty hard to remember exactly. Somebody fix this. I also have no idea how long it is either.

My only addition (space permitting) would have been the inclusion of "G Spot" since it originally was slated for use in the movie thumbs up!

How hard can it be to just put on the album tracks with the b-sides of the era on a single CD? Makes far much more sense than all of your efforts razz

Well, there's not a version circulating of that song that would have the same sound-quality as the album tracks, and everybody just hates mixtapes with fluctuating sound quality! The only PR-era outtakes that have near-CD quality are the two instrumentals, the "Possessed" instrumental version and the other one that circulates most commonly under the names "Climax" or "Jammin' Til Dawn".

Not true at all. In fact, Marvel wound up in a major legal dispute for years with Stephen Gerber over ownership of the character. While the movie was a major dissapointment, the character still has a huge cult following, and Marvel wasn't willing to let that go.

Marvel just recently patched things up with Gerber, and released a limited series with him writing a couple of years back. They even recently released an action figure of Howard in their Marvel Legends series:

I did an "Extended edition" of PR a while back, only using official tracks from that era. This is what I included:

1. Let's Go Crazy (extended)
2. Take Me With U
3. The Beautiful Ones
4. Computer Blue
5. Darling Nikki
6. When Doves Cry
7. I Would Die 4 U
8. Baby, I'm a Star
9. Purple Rain
10. God (Instrumental)
11. 17 Days
12. Erotic City (Extended)
13. Another Lonely Christmas (Extended)
14. God (Vocal)
15. I Would Die 4 U (Extended)

Now, I did this on my computer, so it clocks in at almost 90 minutes. If you leave off the extended IWD4U, it should fit on a single disc.

It just doesn't flow well when you do that. Those songs don't mesh well. Works in the film, not on a soundtrack.

I did my own "music from the motion picture - Purple Rain" CD ages ago

1. Let's Go Crazy (Extended Version) - Prince & the Revolution
2. Jungle Love - The Time
3. Take Me With U - Prince & Apollonia
4. Modernaire - Dez Dickerson & the Modernaires
5. The Beautiful Ones - Prince & the Revolution
6. When Doves Cry - Prince
7. Computer Blue (Extended Version) - Prince & the Revolution
8. Darling Nikki - Prince & The Revolution
9. Sex Shooter (Extended Version) - Apollonia 6
10. The Bird - The Time
11. Purple Rain - Prince & the Revolution
12. I Would Die 4 U - Prince & the Revolution
13. Baby I'm A Star - Prince & the Revolution

I didn't include any B-Sides due to the time constraints of the CD
(and the fact that they weren't actually in the movie). I also didn't
include the extended version of I Would Die 4 U for the same reasons.

Well, that's certainly the closest thing what I would've done - also with time limitations in mind:

1. Let's Go Crazy (7:35) - it's not really an "extended", more like "not an album edit" biggrin
2. Take Me With U (3:54)
3. Possessed (7:44)
4. The Beautiful Ones (5:56) - the released version. I like that best. biggrin
5. God (Love Theme from "Purple Rain") (7:49) - I love this one. It's beeeyoutiful! mushy
6. When Doves Cry (5:52)
7. Father's Song (1:12) - a kinda nice intro to...
8. Computer Blue (11:34) - with the hallway speech
9. Darling Nikki (4:15)
10. Purple Rain (13:34) - the "not an album edit" version smile
11. I Would Die 4 U (3:17)
12. Baby I'm A Star (4:54)

- all in order of their appearance in the movie. biggrin
