This thread is the first I've ever heard of this - are both "short" versions just different edits of the extended version (as with the two Pink Cashmere edits available on the European 4-track PC single)? What are the specific differences?

the 7" vinyl version i own (and back in the day i lived near a wrecka stow, so i used to get my prince singles the week they came out) was just an edit of the 12" US vinyl version that ended with the "hello, hello, hello" vocal bit edited into the end. the supposed 7" version on the hits/the b-sides has a bit of a guitar lick edited into the end, and it fades out. there are other weird edits in the hits/b-sides version, but i'd have to listen to both versions again to point out the specifics. the ending is the biggest difference i can recall, but the two are indeed different versions.

The B-Sides version has a vocal verse at the end which the extended version hasn't, & it really is an additionnal one (& not a "pasted" one) cuz the backing voices r a bit different

Just let me get it straight: does it mean that there r TWO edit versions of "hello" : the one on the B-Sides album, & another one with no additionnal parts from a 7" single?

there are at least two 7" versions of "hello": the version on the original US 7" vinyl single, and the version on the hits/the b-sides.

whether or not the version on the hits/the b-sides is the same as the UK single edit, i don't know.

And the original US 7" is simply an edit of the full-length, right?

A lot of the songs in the ahdio shows from NPGMC 2001 have slight differences. For example, "Race" contains an additional keyboard solo not found on any previously released version. I'd be hard pressed to go through each song and find every tiny difference though - I'll leave that to you guys lol

Also, the Pret-a-Porter version of "Get Wild" is totally different to any of the versions released on Exodus or the maxi-single.

"Good Love" was released on the "Bright Lights Big City" soundtrack and on Crystal Ball. One has a guitar solo and the other a sax solo (can't remember off the top of my head which was which!)

And just to confirm with "Hello" - yes there are two 7" versions. The version on The Hits/B-Sides is a simple edit of the 12", however the original 7" single contains a slightly different arrangement towards the end (which cannot be heard on the 12" version or the Hits/B-Sides).

The Stick & Pop That Clutch have a few added sounds, too. I think these r the only other songs from NPGAhdio in this case, though i might b wrong. It's been alleged that The Future (Remix) & Heaven Must Be Near have slight differences but i haven't been able 2 hear any.

Nope. The Crystal Ball version has just been slightly edited & therefore is shorter. No sax solo on any of them.

It has 2 b the contrary cuz the version on The B-Sides HAS an additionnal verse in the end which ISN'T on the Extended Version.[Edited 10/7/05 7:46am]

exactly. my memory might be a little off here, but i think they just tacked on the "hello, hello, hello" vocal fanfare from the beginning of the song to the end of the 7" edit, as opposed to a fade-out.

"y should eye do that" is now different with some more little things here and there than the one originally released.

I paid mega-bucks to obtain the 7" version of Alphabet St. on CD. It was only available on the radio promo CD.

Well, where I'd always imagined it to fade out naturally after the last long "Yeah" (without the album bit tacked on), the actual "fade" sounds as if it's been processed digitally.

I mean, the echo sounds like a digital effect. I can't explain what I mean.

nod you are right! This is the one that i was going to say.
There is a delay/reverb effect finishing off the end of the
Alphabet St. edit version much like the end of the IWD4U single edit.

i have always loved the 2 different versions of Hello (7" & 12").
I always thought that the 12" version was an re-edit of the 7" version
extending it by adding space in the begining & end for the cool guitar
parts. The last verse which appears at the end of the 7" was cut
off for the added guitar and Prince's ending dialouge.
Hence the "fresh" dance mix wink
