Interesting conversation

This weekend I as working for a Polish promoter who organized a big festival in Poland (Herbaliser and Telepopmusik were some of the headlining acts). During the festival we had some movie screenings. One of the movies we played was "Doo Wop" by David Lanzmann, a French director. The opening sequence shows a man waking up in his apartment... There is the famous Prince with Muhammad Ali photograph on the wall. Then we have the main character driving through the city with "The Daisy Chain" roaring from the speakers. Later in the movie we can hear "The Sensual Everafter" followed by a conversation two of the main characters have on "Rainbow Children", which to the main guy shows Prince's striving for freedom and limitlessness. I was like "hey, Prince would not normally allow for something like that". Later I caught the director of the film, who was guesting at the festival. I asked him about the abundance of Prince references in his flick. He told me he was a great Prince fan for 20 years. His goal was to mix cinema with Prince. He himself is a musician and has a band which plays decent funk and even features in the movie. He told me he was negotiating the use of Prince songs in his movie for over a year, directly with Prince and some of his management team. The film was low-budgetary so he had told Prince staight away he would not be able to pay him much for the rights to the tracks. People at Universal Music France were just laughing him in the face saying Prince does not let people incorporate his music in films usually. After a year of e-mailing Prince and his team he finallly got a permit. Prince saw a DVD copy of the film and let David use his songs in it. Prince did not want any money for it, although David paid him an amount proportional to the films modest budget.

I thought I would just share this story with you. It is great that Prince appreciates independent artists like David Lanzmann and is not always, if ever, oriented towards making money.

Sorry for posting the same topic thrice. Moderatros, please delete the redundant threads:-).

Maybe you could add some comments about the movie to the thus far, comment-less page on IMDB? smile
