I've thought about this question in terms of Prince, but not only the gay question, also being part of the black club, the guitarist club, the rockers club or any of the many clubs that he could be accepted into. The problem and the wonder of Prince is that he is gloriously impossible to peg and narrow down into any one thing. I've never felt he belonged in anyone's club although he is affiliated with many. There is something about his weirdness that makes everyone accept him just enough but not so much as to be accepted. Prince is the eternal outsider. He's never been truly accepted anywhere by anyone, not in his hometown, not in music circles and certainly not by his race or sexuality.

clapping Very well articulated.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

CynicKill

Simply put, Prince is a man. All true gay icons are women. It's always been that way and it always will be. George Michael and Boy George don't have the gay icon magnitude of Madonna or Kylie. It's kind of an unwritten rule and it's hard to explain. Camille Paglia once said that gay men recognize the true "power" and "magnitude" of woman and it comes out in their icon-ization. You'd have to read Paglia to get the real gist of what she's saying but it pretty much boils down to men rule the world, women ARE the world.

Plus I don't know ONE gay man who likes "Prince" in my circles. Philistines.

Yeah. That song's ambiguous as hell, and everyone's got their own interpretation. Some say Tracy was his lover, some say just his friend. Some believe there has to be truth to it, and some believe it's a work of fiction.

As far as I know, P. isn't saying either way. shrug

Actually, I think the lyrics for "Sometimes it Snows in April" are as follows:

I used 2 cry 4 tracy because he was my only friend
Those kind of cars don't pass u every day

and...

Springtime was always my favorite time of year,
A time 4 lovers holding hands in the rain.

you guys are reading too much into this. I'll bet he planned on having some woman singing it or something. Even if he did sing it to a man, that man would be him, he loves himself, we sure know that. Like he said in Prettyman, he likes to smell himself. He loves his own stink.

I think you're reaidng too much into it and making assumptions based on...I'm really not sure.

Fact is, the song calls Tracy his "only friend" and may imply that Tracy was his lover. Either way or both, it's no big deal.

That song reminds me of Baldwin's Giovanni's Room. UTCM and GR both take place in France (GR has some scenes set on the Cote d'Azur), the singer/author never seems quite comfortable with his relationship to the subject of the song/book, and both Christopher Tracy and Giovanni die. twocents

Although he ain't gay, he is portrayed as being gay like as he is the 'other' in contemporary stereotypes of black males. In New Zealand most people think of black males as bulky, dark Love Jones types that are physically large and imposing. Its the same with NZ Maori men, we have the same problems with I'm a stud type routines, as I know the highest reltive percentage of solo mothers in the states are African Americans. Here in New Zealand they are Maori women, as the men generally love to fool around or are in jail, or have a misogjny towards women. Unfortunately Maoris are the most sexist race on earth I feel. And theres a big attraction the American black gangsta, hip hop culture, we have local rappers, gangs and drive by shootings.
Princes songs describe alot of fleeting sex encounters and people act on it. I am not saying every obeys the lyrics but a lot do. Its not Prince mostly people like Snoop Dogg and Xzibit and other people who I can't spell.

Back 2 discussion

Prince is labelled gay as
1. Hes quite diminutive
2. He wears makeup and funny clothes.
3. He speaks high pitched.
4. He writes love songs in addition to the boning yo ho's type stuff u hear now.
I mean who remembers the Jamie foxx sketch. Its obvious some are is frightened by Princes androgynous sexuality.

Yeet its a load of stereotypical crap.

LET THE FATHERS STAND UP AND BE REAL MEN INSTEAD PLAYING UP TO OUTDATED MACHO STEREOTYPES!!!!

That's the big problem. We put everyone in a box when the box has no business being built. You should be whoever you are with no problems. That's why I love Prince, he don't give a shit.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I think to be a gay icon, you have to have suffered some kind of hardship in your life or career. As women are still more likely than men to get fucked over in their personal lives or careers, that's why more women artists are gay icons than men.

As for Prince, he's been successful since he was 19. Although there have been blips in his career, he's never had to claw his way back.

I think the common consituents of a gay icon would be:

"Difficult" early life
The "Hungry Years"
Inappropriate relationships
Overwrought performances involving theatrical gestures
Acknowledgement that their core fan-base is gay

Liza has all these qualities. Madonna has them all. Cher does (although "Hungry" to Cher would mean not having the cash for another tummy-tuck - it's all relative).

Well maybe he isn't swooned over in the gay community but i think many like him and appreciate what he has done for openeing up sexuality in society. I was at my friends wedding and he had one family friend who is about 35 who is openly gay at the party....he was the only one there to compliment my tattoo (symbol) on my back and then i guess later he told Evan, "that girl has real class" I thought it was kind of nice...lie he could tell what i stood for just by looking at the tat

Oh boy... Judy Garland had to be at the origin of that list. Liza invented nothing... like mother, like daughter.

Until I joined the org, I have met very few gay men that are Prince fans.

I must admit that I think going to Prince concerts is GREAT. So many men there are flirty with other men, it all feels like a sort of speed dating thing, 'cept you know you like the same music and defend yourself liking a man wearing high heels to other people too.

I kissed more men and went home with more phone numbers than I ever did at a Kylie or Madonna concert.

Damn. That's cool. When I saw Prince last year in NYC, I was sitting next to a woman who was a lesbian and she told me that Prince would be the only guy she'd have sex with then she asked if I would do him. I said sure and these 2 guys turned around and smiled back at me lol All this while Prince is singing Purple Rain. It was too funny.
