Fucking bigots the majority of you..'fruit' 'Gays' ... and what a wonderful line in cliches by virtue of the very nature of not only this thread, but also with mentions of Bette Midler, Cher and Madonna.

Not all us poofs are the same you know - stop putting people into boxes.

Prince is an icon to me and I'm a fruit - and I know lots of other poofs that like him too despite his blatant homophobia at times. Personally for me it's about the music. I like Eminem too - bet that doesn't fit in your stereotype does it - huh? Huh?

Oh man, give it a rest.

This whole thread is reminding me of a relavent story...

I grew up in Minneapolis, I have alot of anecdotes about Prince. Anyway there's theis gay bar we used to goto in the early 90s called The Salloon. At one time Prince was doing some hanging out with Patti Labelle.

The story goes that Prince and Patti Labelle walked into the Salloon one night and got semi-mobbed by a bunch of queens going "Patti Labelle! Patti Labelle!".

I wasn't there, but I heard all about it. Funny, eh?

I really don't know. I think it does have a lot to do with Prince never reaching out specifically to the gay community -but also his alledged homophobic comments and behaviour in recent years.

I really hope the reports aren't true, and I won't believe it unless I hear a reliable report. I don't think I could call myself a fan anymore if it turned out to be true -it'd hurt too much.

Because Prince never really acknowledged the gay community, like the others. I doubt Minnesota has that big of a queer following..lol.

Minnepolis has, (or had) the second highest concentration of queers per capita in the United States, right after San Francisco.

cool Because its a stereotype, just because a black dude, aint a Snoop Doggy Dogg or a big Love Jones type dude, he has to be femmy. And People think Prince is femmy cause he wears make up and frilly outfits on stage and sings with a high voice. Some read it as poofy, I read as a great way to score ladies and P has no trouble there. Prince is just different.
He wrote a few gay songs in the early days such as Uptown where he mentions being seduced by a drag queen (she even made love to me, best bit I ever had) and the Stick from Time's first album was pretty fxxken gay (Ladies cum 2 quick, give me satisfaction put the stick in my mouth). But just cause he writes them, doesnt mean he does it. Prince is iopen minded then he says we don't care if someones gay or not. Also hes a 7th day Adventist a sect that frowns on Homosexuality. I call it a sect (pushing cult) as I am a gay Christian, and believe God does not encourage homophobia and intolerance razz .
Also I am gay and dont choose artists I listen to because of their sexuality. I do not fancy him, but see him as a supremely talented and funky artist. So he aint a gay icon as hes too bright to play up to cliched stereotypes and doesnt baltantly target various groups as possible fans. Prince merely plays and lets u decide if you want 2 listen or not lol

So in the words of the immortal George Clinton "free ur mind and ur ass will follow" and Prince "If u set ur mind free baby, maybe you'll understand"
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

i guess he IS an enigma, but i saw an extrodinary interview with him on oprah a few years ago where he talked about being 50% male and 50% female in his being and gives both opportunity to express themselves at different times. i admire and respect that. i think he is straight but can relate fully to his feminine side and what that entails

Yeah. That song's ambiguous as hell, and everyone's got their own interpretation. Some say Tracy was his lover, some say just his friend. Some believe there has to be truth to it, and some believe it's a work of fiction.

As far as I know, P. isn't saying either way. shrug

I thought it said that too. That's funny though.

1. Because, as others stated, he never specifically marketed himself to that audience
2. Gay icons normally seem to be females. shrug Liza, Judy, Bette, Babs, the list goes on...

Thats lame... I was just at a club here in L.A. last night discussing this... Dave Navaro, Robbie Williams, and Josh Homme have HUGE (wait for it) gay followings out here and I think they are probably straight... It has more to do with their flirtations to the gay-community and that these guys are more masculine/fuckable, to be blunt.

RRRIIIIIGGGGHHHHHTTTT!!!

but seriously, the answer to the question is that Prince LOVES women. A deep unmistakable love for WOMEN. I really can't think of any straight man that gay men have considered an icon...ok, there's one SPONGE BOB. But he's questionable..LOL

and it turned out to be that damned tele-tubby.

After reading fluid's response on another thread, that gave me an idea for this thread.

Until I joined the org, I have met very few gay men that are Prince fans. Going by Prince's feminine look, gestures, and even sometimes playful lyrics, I've never understood why Prince was never a huge gay icon.

Female singers like Cher, Janet Jackson, and Madonna are gay icons. Before them, there were females such as Judy Garland, Bette Midler, and Barbara Streisand. It seems that all gay icons were and still are all females. I understand that in previous times, there were not many gay male role models because they were living in the closet or even men whose appearance (like Prince's) is questionable.

Every gay man I know that I have asked about Prince, says "Prince is too fish (feminine)" or "I don't like his attitude, he is a complete bitch". Well, I would think that a gay man could relate more with another male, whether straight or gay, that would have had to suffer the same prejudice and admire the way he flaunts it rather than a straight female that hasn't had to go through any of this.

People like to say that all gay men secretly wish to be a woman. Well, that's a damn lie. There are gay men that range from extremely feminine to overly masculine and I know many that have absolutely no desire to be a woman whatsoever. I've seen all ranges, from the most masculine to the most feminine, gay men fall all over themselves for people like Madonna and Cher and they can't stand Prince. I have never understood that.

His lyrics R straight! Imagine him singing "Eye Can't Make U Love Me" or 'Adore' to a man. The closest gay songs that I know of R 'I Like It There', 'If I Was You Girlfriend' and the end of 'Pink Casmere' (if I'm hearing the lyricks right) Is he saying "boy on boy'? I would love 2 C a drag show with Prince songs but I NEVER have.(maybe 'Condition Of The Heart')

I've thought about this question in terms of Prince, but not only the gay question, also being part of the black club, the guitarist club, the rockers club or any of the many clubs that he could be accepted into. The problem and the wonder of Prince is that he is gloriously impossible to peg and narrow down into any one thing. I've never felt he belonged in anyone's club although he is affiliated with many. There is something about his weirdness that makes everyone accept him just enough but not so much as to be accepted. Prince is the eternal outsider. He's never been truly accepted anywhere by anyone, not in his hometown, not in music circles and certainly not by his race or sexuality.
