Do you think being a Prince fan is kinda like being a star treck fanatic?

Ok how come people who do not like Prince view loving Prince as some really odd thing? Seriously I hate to say this but sometimes I am embarrassed by telling people how big of a fan I am of Prince. I really don't see why others think it is any odder than meeting a trekie(sp?), star wars freek, harley davidson lover, or obsessive golfer. I don't get it some people love extreme sports...I love music expecialy Prince music and his side prodjects. What is the big deal?

Anxiety

i think it can be, and if that's what guns your motors, so be it.

i also think everyone has their hobbies and passions, and for some people it's collecting cow trinkets for their kitchen and for other people it's birdwatching.

one time i got on the bus to go to work and i saw this guy who, swear to god, was decked out in a prince painter's cap, an NPG jacket, and he was wearing a MOONWRAP on his damn ear. now THAT is some serious famboracca shit right there. omg

but hey, if it makes him happy, right on.

i have a hard time presenting myself based on the things i like - i don't wear a lot of prince stuff or have prince pins on my jacket or bag or whatnot. even in my apartment, there are only a couple of prince things out, and you'd have to dig into my collection to really suss out what my obsessions are. i think having TOO much of any one thing in my environment numbs me to it, so i keep my paraphernalia to a bit of a minimum.

still, i think it's weird that people can say they're a beatles or elvis fanatic and people think it's charming; say you're a prince or a madonna fanatic and people think you're eccentric at best. shrug

Yeah I get the strange looks and comments whenever people get a hint of my love for Prince. I stay pretty low key about it but once someone sees my computer screen, cd collection or any thing with the man's face or name on it, I get pegged as "weird" or "eccentric" lol

I have a friend who is obsessed with all things Bob Marley (music, t-shirts, stickers, weed) and everybody thinks he's so cool, and deep!

What a double standard! I just don't get it
lol

Anything that (Singer, artist, etc.) that incurs the kind of obsession that I see at this board is like being a Star Trek Fanatic.

I cannot say much to anyone about Prince as I am so sick of all the jokes about him. Most people say oh you mean the symbol? Idiots.

Aren't there some trekkies who get into speaking Klingon and other made up star trek languages? Like fams and Princebonics.

My boyfriend's kind of a Trekkie (but not so much that he speaks Klingon & goes to conventions dressed up). There are DEFINETE parallels...the biggest one is probably how people look at you like you're a freak when you mention it.

Actually, being into scifi is probably slightly more acceptable than being into Prince. Usually whenever I tell someone around my age he's my favorite, they get this look on their face like I've grown a second head...or they ask, "Who's that?" disbelief

I wonder if you can put those down on a CV?

"It says here, you speak French, Spanish and Klingon, and can write fluently in Princebonics. Very Impressive".

I see people being Prince fans and labelled as "geeks" as something that only goes on with teenagers and people in their 20s. Most people over 35 have been a fan of Prince at some time in their life before so it's no big deal to them. However, some of them do ask me....."You are still a fan?".

I think the two are totally different. The star trek thing is the typical treacle/syrup like american goodwill, sweeter than sweet clap trap that i come to expect in a wide variety of yankee tv/films in the media. The prince thing is the justifiable worship of a raw talent that has been going strong for roughly 25 years and those 25 years have been earned the hard way. From the early purple rain days to the warner battle to the musicology tour its been the story of real talent and survival.Unlike elvis, madonna, michael jackson and the heartless corporations that back them in the sales department prince has earned all his fans and they are certainly nothing like star trek fans.

Not at all because Prince is a great artist and most people don't know good music when they here it..that's a shame. So when I hear people talk bad about P,it's on and crackin'!Nobody's gonna start talking bad about my man. So I'm like screw them, shoot!

It does get annoying when people take cheap shots at you for your hero worship of prince and the most annoying thing is when they say the symbol as they are totally unaware of the fact he is back to using his proper name once more.my advice is to ignore these so called music fans.they are not worth trying to enlighten.its like trying to teach a chimpanzee to read or write.Let all these apes go back to there eminem, justin timberlake or kelly clarkson.i have better musical knowledge than them all and knowledge is power.

I think by definition, a geek is someone is obsessed by something, whatever it might be. It doesn't matter particularly whether it is something fashionable or unfashionable or you can justify the obsession. In fact, being so precious about an obsession that you defend it throws up a big red flag that you are in fact an obsessed fanatic geek. The really obsessed addicted ones don't even accept they are obsessed.

The fact you lot are reading this minor thread on a Prince fan site in itself proves you are obsessed, and therefore are geeks, and that is what is similar to being a Star Trek obsessed fanatic.

Not me of course, though...

Just think, somewhere out there on a Star Trek fansite, someone is probably posting a thread 'Do you think being a Star Trek fan is kinda like being a Prince fanatic?'

wink
