Can prince fill a dance floor?

Hi,
I dj at a bar in the town where i live. My set consists mainly of Hip Hop, R&B, Funk and soul. Whenever i play a Prince track the dance floor just clears - Even songs like kiss dont work. I never understand why? Cameo works, luther works, george benson works, JB works, early michael jackson works too but never Prince.

WHY mad

Erotic City is the only one that works for me. I usually mix it with "Don't cha" by the Pussycat Dolls.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Ain't that the truth! Even "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" or "Alphabet St." don't help!

I was at a nightclub last Thursday and it was 80's night.
I went up and asked for some old school Prince and he played U Got the Look

i was really surprised at how well it was recieved.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

You are at the wrong place then. Listen, keeping the dancefloor packed is the responsibilty of the DJ. If you don't flow the songs together- you can empty a floor with any wrong combination. You just gotta know your audience. Pussy Control at a country western bar? Not a good idea....

man..."d.m.s.r." and "erotic city" are usually dance floor fillers, in the instances i've been in..."mutiny" is an odd addition. ain't really dance-worthy material, imo; it's funky, but not danceable-funky. "let's work" usually works, too...same with "kiss".

what kinda clientele does the bar you work in attract?

Did u read my initil post? i play R&B, hip hop, funk and soul. Where wouldnt prince fit into this set? My flow is tight. Prince just dont work unless your a fan or if some motherfucker has butchered one of his tunes into a dance song. See nasty girl for an example of this. Nasty girl is perhaps the only Prince track that i could possibly play now that the masses have lapped up an inferior version

Its strange. u aint always gonna get everybody with such a diverse crowd but Prince just never works for me. The floor just empties everytime. I dont get it.

my audience attitude seems to be - "if it aint a hit then it must be shit".

Oh yeah, I played Housequake once to. Again, it was just Game Over. Perhaps there is a Funk vacine given out a birth in my town.

This is nothing short of pathetic. Kids wouldn't know a real dance song if it slapped them across their faces. I went to a club a couple of weeks ago and they were playing all the current R&B/Hip Hop stuff and it was so fucking lame. One word: deplorable. A Couple of years ago, I requested Prince at some ball I went to and they he played Erotic City and I will say, I saw a good amount of people leave the floor so this isn't impossible but I got up there and dropped it like it was hot LOL! If they can't get with Kiss and Erotic City then they are truly fucked up.

Having said this, my desire for Prince today is for him to do a new dance song and get it out there. I feel he has one left in him. Not a Musicology type song but a P Control, DMSR, Kiss type of dance song. I pray the new album has this on there. To 3121, maybe you should leave that place. The funk left that building ages ago and you don't need to put yourself in that environment, though I understand that you got to pay the bills. Man, fuck them fools. This thread got me mad now. mad

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I was thinking that too, cause "Let's Work" can fill a dance in a heartbeat! Lovin' the Fred Sandford avatar, btw!

Unfortunately for you, 3121, you have the give your audience what they want. Unfortunately for them, it's not Prince. Either give 'em the crap they're used to, or find a club with peeps with better taste!
