what release offers the best in bass-playing?

the bass-playing on the black album is truly amazing. very organic, deep and funky. did prince play the bass himself on this one?

the bass in the opening track le grind is soooo coooool...

guess the black album would be my favorite

what yo think?

I made a thread like this not so long ago, but that was about the symbol album and how great the bass lines are on that. It has the most top quality bass lines of any prince album. Blue light, arrogance, god created woman and sacrifice of victor. All some of the best.

Believe it or not, i'm going with Around the World In A Day. Think about it: "Pop Life" (sampled by Big Daddy Kane), "America" (true example of a bass being on the 1), "Tamborine" (Prince is one of the few people who can make a bass burble like that). Not to mention the bass work in "777-9311". Dammit, the man has a crapload of classic basslines, those are just a few.

Days Of Wild (I prefer many of the bootleg versions for that raw bass sound)

Agreed, that one is just killer and I'd like to add the bass work on "Let's Work"...

P's best bass playing on an album by far is the 1999 album. I would then say "UTCM" album. "Let's Work " and "Private Joy" from the Controversy album showcases some of his best as well. But nothing can fuck with his consistent funk bass lines on the 1999 album.

Lets not forget about "Party Up". Let's Work" is one of my favorites. And so is the Bass line on "Sexy Dancer" and "DMSR" .

I'd have to agree -- 1999. Prince's style for off-beat bass playing is showcased in a lot of different songs: DMSR, International Lover, Free, Lady Cab Driver, Automatic... It's lyrical on one track, thick and funky on another.

Runner-up: ATWIAD.

I'd have 1999 too, the bass was definitely the star of that album. Of course SOTT has some great ones too like Ballad of Dorothy Parker and If I was your girlfriend
