Seeing him receive an award in the UK. He really pissed off the presenter Noel Edmonds.
Noel Edmonds used to make and host Saturday evening TV shows. They were crappy, crappy, crap, crap.
Thanks Prince.

Seeing a commercial for Magnum P.I. on ITV in the UK which used U Got The Look as its background music. I even bought Roxette's album Look Sharp thinking it was their song The Look. After Batman I discovered SOTT and my life was forever changed.

I'd love to see that Magnum P.I. trailer again. That was a sweet show...

Being 15 and watching Prince in the 'Cream' video.

I thought he was The Man dancing with all those ladies ... .

I tried to get my hair in that typhoon but it didn't work out (sigh)!.

The performance of Electric Chair on the SNL 15th anniversary in 1990. I was 6 or 7 and I thought that song was SO awesome. I begged for the Batman soundtrack for my birthday and that's how the long hard road to nearly obsessed fandom began.smile

That's 1989 amigo! You're only 18, the long hard road?!

My first memory of Prince was seeing a big poster of him plastered over our bathroom door. He had on some tiny black bikini drawers and a coat over it. At first I didn't understand what my mother's fascination was with this man, but then I saw Purple Rain and developed one of my own!

Paula Yates introduced him on Channel 4 - it was his 28th birthday and they recorded a video. Heard it in the background at home. Took a look - I was hooked. Still have the video - when I'm down - boy can it cheer me up.

...reading an article about him in my babysitter's "Right On" magazine, around the time "I Wanna Be Your Lover" came out. It said he was wearing gym shorts and high-top sneakers. From what I recall, Prince did not divulge very much information about himself during that interview.

2 funny. Mine is riding with my parents on my way to school and hearing "Do me baby" come on the radio. I learned to associate Prince with awkward silences in the car.

In my dads room when i was 5...
the radio was on...
these words came out through the airwaves...
"Oh...I got a live one up here!
Hoohoohoohooo!!! Hahahahaha!!!"
This totally freaked me out...
I was thinkin what in the skullfuck was that...
Scared as hell...
Suddenly...the synth riff...the electric snare...
"Get the funk up!!! Batman!!!"
Little did i realise that 13 years later i would be typin this on the org...

I've seen the future and it will be...

Can't remember the very 1st one, but the most striking was when the video to "Cream" was released. All those ladies in their suspenders and this was the early 90's, the whole lingerie culture had just started enjoying mainstream exposure. Madonna's "Justify My Love" and I was only 10. Aarrgh!

watching the DIAMONDS AND PEARLS and prince videos 1992/1993 all the time. then discovered the prince album in a local store - the artwork was so different and somekind of cool so I saved up my allowance for weeks to come to buy it. but it was hard for a twelve-year-old-boy at the edge of the world, in the middle of nowhere, to understand what that guy was singing about... years later... well, my inspiriation...
tried "easier" work like PURPLE RAIN then and then AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY and then... ya know...

It was either catching his "TMBGITW" video on MTV, or then Homer Simpsons's reference of the early 80s to the time when "The artist formerly known as Prince was currently known as Prince." smile

What a great thread!!

My very first memory of Prince was hearing the song "I Wanna Be Your Lover" back in the summer of 1979 when I was in the car headed to the beach with my aunt, uncle and two cousins.

Of course, I was aware of Prince during the 1999 days, because my friends and I used to dance to the songs, "1999", "Little Red Corvette" and "Delirious" in the bars all the time. One funny memory I have from that period in time is that every time we would hear the song "1999", all 6 or 8 of us would scream, jump up, and go running for the dance floor. ROFLMOA!!! What a bunch of crazy young women we were! lol lol

I didn't really get into Prince all that much until I saw the movie "Purple Rain". Once I saw that movie, I was hooked. I can't believe I have been a follower of Prince for almost 18 years! Wow! Other bands that I have liked have only lasted one or two years at the most. Prince is the only musician who is able to keep me interested in his music for all of these years.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

My first Prince memory is me seeing the video of Kiss on tv. It must have been in 1986, when I was 10 yrs old. A couple of weeks later I bought my first album, Parade. A year later (or mayb 2), when I heard SOTT, I really became a fan, and started buying his older stuff.

My first Prince memory was seeing 'When Doves Cry' when I was nine. Some music channel was showing it because MC Hammer's 'Pray' had just become really big and they were doing some special on sampling and whatnot. But for some reason i didn't quite know that this guy was Prince. Then, when I was ten, i saw the video for 'Gett Off' and I liked the song but was very confused. I had no idea what a one nite stand was and I wanted to know what he was getting off of. And then I learned, thanks to Prince I guess. After that I was able to connect him to 'When Doves Cry'.
