The songs have no urgency, no innovation, and there are barely even any melodies in the songs themselves.
They're like inoffensive, meandering band practice sessions that don't particularly go anywhere most of the time. ----- Yo, what the freak are you talking about? I went a bunch of places when I listened to this album. If it's not relevant or all that, then how come it got Prince a grammy for best instrumental album? ANSWER ME THAT, PUNK!

Don't you get the fact that there are several moments of great inspiration on NEWS? How about the soft ending of North, with atmospheric keyboard? What about the second section of East, with the blistering "Miles Davis on acid" guitar/sax riff-off? That alone is worth the money. It was what the npg site played on one of the pages when NEWS was being promoted, and it hooked me from word one. How about the gentle (sweet) introduction to West? What about the last seven or so minutes of South, from the breakdown, which is hypnotice like only a Prince track can be. If you can listen to this album with an open mind and heart, then you'll enjoy them. If not, I feel sorry for you. Almost. Don't feel sorry for us - I put NEWS on every night, in a couple of minutes I'm fast asleep, it's cured my insomnia miraculously

NEWS is great. I say and i will say it again, people dont dig NEWS because they like Nirvana and Ramones. They want intro verse chorus verse and fuzzy power chords. Or they wanna music just to shake them azz. And dance.

Actually, it lost. It only got nominated. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

For me, NEWS is an extension of the One Nite Alone Tour sounchecks where they would just improvise on a groove for ages. You can just lose yourself in the groove - it's great! I certainly don't discount that possibility. Unfortunately, it's a horrible idea. It's not that I'm against the idea on paper of Prince doing an instrumental album. I happen to absolutely adore Arboretum, for example. Is Arboretum an instrumental song or what, and if so what album is it on?/Where can I find it? "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Just finally listened to East and it sounded like it was getting interesting in the guitar sounding like it was cranking up or something parts but then like he just quits. I could'nt tell where he was going in this one.
I still have South, North and West to listen to. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.
