"a case of u"

anyone know why prince never sings the first verse of "a case of u"? anyone have a theory? i'm interested in anyone's ideas here, and i trust it is all speculation, 'cause god only knows why prince makes the decisions he makes. for example, ever wonder why, in the booklet for emancipation, he goes out of his way to tell us that "sex in the summer" was originally titled "conception"? i mean, how is that relevant information? i think he changed the title because the word "conception" begins with "con-" and there was a time a few years back when he made a pretty big deal about words beginning with "con-" being somehow inherently negative. my point here is that prince always has some unique way of looking at things that no one would suspect, and that and these obscure things tend to motivate much of his behavior. so...i'm wondering if there is some particular reason he doesn't ever sing the first verse of "a case of u"?

let's not give Prince too much credit for having some mysterious reasons for every move he does. i doubt the descision to not include a verse is too deep. what are the lyrics...is there some swearing in it or some subject he'd disagree with like The Christ vs. The Cross? I would imagine not as it's a straight up love song type...

I don't think it's a mystery why he left off the first verse.

Just before our love got lost you said, "
I am as constant as a northern star."
And I said, "Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar."
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet

I can only guess that the first verse doesn't mean as much to Prince as the rest of the song. I don't have a problem with the omission. I think the song starts off a lot stronger with:

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid

This has always been my favorite line in the song. Why not start with it?

Because He created the track for that song around the heartbeat of his unborn child. "Conception" was the whole base of the song. (The funky pulsating sound that you hear in the intro.

I think Prince just chose this particular verse because he has changed the meaning of the song from the original. Joni's song is a very personal love song, about a very human relationship. Prince has turned it into a song about redemption, presumably about God rather than a lover. When Joni sings "I'm fightened by the devil and drawn to those that ain't afraid", it sounds like she's scared of letting herself go because she's afraid of the consequences, but is attracted to people who are more reckless, who aren't so concerned with behaving the right way. When Prince changes this to "I used to be frightened by the devil, and drawn to those that weren't afraid" it changes the meaning completely. He's not frightened anymore because he knows God. He was scared when he was lost, and drawn to those that had no fear because they were saved. He's turned the song into something like a gospel song, and the other verses don't fit with this angle, which is why he only sings this one.

Yes..

and he also says "remember when u told me that love was touching souls? Well, surely you touched mine" which would be another way of saying... "I love you".
You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

What a clever, balanced, & well-thought-out response. Exactly what we've come to expect from this moron.
