kind of an over-reactionary gesture, ain't it? leaving one's dj post merely because the clientele don't respond to prince songs as they "should". doesn't really make much sense...some people like p, some don't. the world keeps spinning.

Honestly, in my opinion,if Prince ever did a cut with Pharrell, Outkast, Snopp Dogg, Kanye West or any other current hip hop giant, good song or not, it'll get that crowd on the dance floor.
If he'd had released the Hot Wit U remix as a video with Eve that'd work too. Unfortunately, now a days, it ain't about the song as it is about the artist. Not always but far too often.

Well i have several friends at school aged 15/16... who once said "did Michael Jackson used to be called Prince??" *shudders*
But they love songs such as "Eoric City, Gett Off, Raspberry Beret" One lad asked me to burn call my name to CD to him because he loved it so much (pardon the pun)

True, I was getting carried away in my rant. It stinks that people don't find the funk but that's on them. They like what they like and we like what we like. As you said, the world keeps spinning and spinning. Thanks [Edited 9/26/05 12:39pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Wow...Erotic City and Kiss don't even work? Are you sure they can hear?
Maybe try A Love Bizarre? I also vote for: Nasty Girl Sexy Dancer Gett Off P. Control Face Down (maybe) I wouldn't try 1999 it's played out since...1999. Also, do they respond to the Pfunk or Stevie? If not, I would say hippin' them to the Purple Funk may be a lost cause... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Where do u live, that might affect the floor clearing so quickly. I know that whenever someone plays P Control the floor fills up! The only problem is that most of the people don't know that it's Prince!!!! I'm back!!!!!!!

I've been DJ(ing) for many years now and I'm only 27 years old!
Back when I started spinning, of course alot of the kids at my High School were into Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg...lots of the Westcoast Hip Hop and now that the times have changed, we have that sorry sounding "Krunk Muzak" which is the most horrifying genre of music...anyone could ever invent! -BUT IT GETS THE WORK DONE; RIGHT . Anyhow...I've been DJ(ing) Prince Music Nights for the past 4-5 years and when I DJ a party thats mainly Hip Hop/R&B...alot of Old School Prince is what gets the crowd in an Uproar! "Head" -Seems to be a favorite, but for some reason I can't stand that one! "Erotic City" is cool, but its getting really overplayed! It depend on the Club and what kind of crowd...I've played for Alternative-Rock crowds and unknown Prince Trax: Interactive (Dance Mix), Endorphinmachine, Loose, Human Body, Pheromone, Come On (Techno Mix),When Doves Cry (Techno Mix), Kiss (Daft Punk Mix), Strange but True...all these trax...one after another seems to do the trick! Then alot of the Suburbian Kids come up and ask if thats PRINCE! Also...other songs that gets the kids up and dancing with no clue...is: Mad, Now, Gett Off or for the dance club vibe...try: The Greatest Romance (Neptunes/Dance Vers.) right into Sleep around, Rave In2 The JoyFantastic, New World. These are just tracklistings that usually gets my crowd pumped. So good Luck on your qwest to get the party started with a Prince Track...I do believe you will fill a dance floor...eventually, you just gotta test the waters and be more spontaneous...try drinking a few strong ass-alcoholic beverages and I can almost guarantee your playlist will become more daring! www.newpowerdetroit.com Prince Music Night COMING WINTER 2005! It depends on what type of club you are in. In the early 1990s, I used to go to a black gay club in my area and the DJ at this club (who was a huge Prince fan) used to play the Prince "Ultimix". This was a 12 minute megamix that contained songs from the beginning of Prince's career through the "Symbol" album era (this obviously was when the megamix was made). It started with "Let's Go Crazy" and progressed into later songs like "My Name Is Prince", "Get Off", "Cream", etc. When it first came on, the dance floor would clear. Later into the mix, it progressed into older Prince songs like "Head", "Let's Work", "Soft And Wet", "I Wanna Be Your Lover", etc. In other words, the "old Prince" as we knew and loved him. The dance floor would fill during this stretch and would empty again when more recent Prince songs would emerge in the mix. By the next week, the DJ was still playing the megamix but he would begin it with the "old Prince" songs and move on to another artist once the newer Prince songs started to come on.
This black gay club used to play mainly house music. This same club started playing mainly rap and hip hop after it took over music. This attracted a younger crowd and they didn't want to hear Prince music of any kind, or any other artist that wasn't rap. All the older black gay people started going to the white gay club which played and still plays mainly techno house. The dance floor fills when the DJ plays "Kiss"....this is a version that has Vaughn Mason and Crew's "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" mixed in it. They also enjoy a version of "Cream" which has Madonna's "Music" and Michael Jackson's "Bad" mixed in it. When it comes to gay clubs, there must be a mix or something different going on. Gay people are more creative and get bored very easy with just normal versions. I've been to straight black clubs that have had an old school music night every once and awhile. These are people that are in their 30s and 40s. Basically anything by the "old Prince" such as "Head", "Let's Work", "Erotic City", etc. went over very well. The only later song I've heard from Prince in these clubs would be either "Kiss" or maybe "Adore" or "Scandalous" when they play a slow jam. In white straight clubs, I've seen the floor pack for the extremely popular songs like "When Doves Cry" and "Kiss". Other than that, Prince has bombed. Andy is a four letter word.

Historically, Prince songs have done very well in clubs. However, now it's all about house and hip hop in the clubs and Prince hasn't had a national dance hit since "My Name Is Prince". If I feel inspired, I'll post all his dance chart hits according to Billboard magazine tonight.

Right on. I've seen him fill a dance floor several times. But with the sound systems being as horrible as they are these days in most clubs nobody can hear a fucking thing what they are playing anyway. So they just dance to the drone, pretending they are really hip to the beats.

So many of the songs suggested here would work great on a dancefloor, but I would suggest that you play them later in the night. Give everyone a chance to get good and liquored up.
The way I see it is, so many people have issues when it comes to Prince. They can't get past the 80's image and appreciate the music, so they won't dance to his music almost on principle. But these same folks might not be so inhibited after they've had a drink or five. I'm firmly planted in denial

If you don't flow the songs together- you can empty a floor with any wrong combination. You just gotta know your audience. Pussy Control at a country western bar? Not a good idea.... Did u read my initil post? i play R&B, hip hop, funk and soul. Where wouldnt prince fit into this set? My flow is tight. Prince just dont work unless your a fan or if some motherfucker has butchered one of his tunes into a dance song. See nasty girl for an example of this. Nasty girl is perhaps the only Prince track that i could possibly play now that the masses have lapped up an inferior version ----- Maybe your in a lame ass club. I have never been anyplace that those songs you listed cleared a dance floor. If you can't get RnB people to dance to Nasty Girls something is really wrong in your town. Looks like a case of Void of Funk. (LOL)

At the time, hip hop had not completely taken over yet and house music was still popular. This club's crowd wanted to hear either house music or fast paced rap (Miami bass type rap). Other than that, they weren't feeling anything else. The music in the clubs has changed since then (for the worse) but club goers minds are still the same. They only want to hear what is in style at the current moment. The crowd is also much younger nowadays and I've noticed that the old school funk fans don't go out anymore. Hell, I through parties at home and have a ball (or two). I hardly ever go clubbing anymore. Andy is a four letter word.

Erotic City and Nasty Girl are the most commonly played tracks, almost always mixed with something else. These days, you'll hear more Prince in a neighborhood bar, where older music is played most of the time. Speaking of that, I saw the I Wanna Be Your Lover video at some place just yesterday and I hear LRC and Kiss regularly.
