I've never really had a bad reaction when I've mentioned I'm a Prince fan to people , quite the opposite in fact , I've discovered a few people who were also closet Prince fans , including my butcher , workmates , people I was in Uni with . The only person I've met who really hated Prince was a good friend and workmate who on closer examination admitted that his girlfriend looooved Prince and he's been made to watch Purple Rain more times than he could stand lol , so I can forgive him disliking Prince . I do occasionally get the typical question like , is he mad , why did he change his name etc , but nothing ever really with any vitriol or hatred for the guy .

It's sad that after all these years none of my friends and family think much of Prince...sad

It is weird that the reactions people get when mentioning they are fans of Prince can be so extreme. I know that music is such a subjective topic, but I always think that bands are going to release at least two songs I like, as such I try to never to say I hate "such-and-such" as I know I'll probably end up having to eat my words.

Perhaps the extremes to which Prince ahs gone allows for such equally extreme reactions. Maybe that's why MJ is still so uniformly, if not loved, but at least appreciated, remembered fondly... People seem to forget that Prince made such great albums in the past. There seems to be a Prince-switch that gets flicked one way or the other depending on what the last story they've heard about him... or maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. All I know is that the reaction I received really shocked me.

Still. I'm over it now.

Not a surprising reaction. Prince is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, no matter how good he is, because he often emphasizes feminity in a way many men and quite a few female find off putting. To top it all, he can be just as sexist as the next guy. The two together with the sometimes piercing high voice amount to the worst nightmare of a pop star for many a person who like their roles clearly defined.

When you think of "gender benders", there's always some concession to make it less threatening. Bowie's voice is definitely male and his flirtration with feminity was very artsy. MJ sings high but he did not flirt with sexuality and cultivated a childlike, child-friendly image (give or take a trial here and there).Bob George had a rather short stint as a full-fledged pop star and did not emphasize sex. Prince does it without a safety net : high voice, sexually agressive, sexist yet girly, etc.

God I get it all the time you think you are having an interesting conversation with someone potentially intelligent ,attractive etc then as soon as you mention Prince they turn there noses up. Mind you I tend to lose interest in someone if they dont have anything constructive and positive to say about the purple genius anyway...does that make me just as narrow minded?
I am so looking forward to meeting Prince fans to chat to at the October Prince party in London..are any of you going?

Yesterday I ran up the sidewalk to drop some Blockbuster videos into their
return tray. There's a guy on a bike coming, I anticipated him swerving to my
right, since the return tray was on my left. No, he keeps going, so I almost
cause him to crash, but I step aside and he brakes, looking back at me with a
big scowl. My heart is still beating from what was almost a collison so I say
"I'm so sorry, I thought -" and I'm cut off with him saying "Silly fucking
prince fag." Then he rode off. (For note, I had on my lovesexy album covere t-shirt on)

Is that supposed to not bother me??? Cuz it did.

Recently, on a trip down under, I was introduced to a girl who to all intents and purposes appeared an attractive person to speak to; intelligent, eloquent, funny, etc... As the evening progresses and various topics of conversation were entered into, discussed and used up, so music crossed our verbal paths. She was into the RHCPs and bands of such ilk. I told her of my unreasonable obsession with Prince and she flipped.

She could not understand how a fan of music could appreciate him, could not understand how a person seemingly sound-of-mind could still hold affection for someone who had changed their name in such preposterous fashion, could not comprehend how a man like Prince enjoys the success he does. To be fair, she did concede he had written a "couple of good tunes", but beyond that she was, it could be said, fairly negative on the small purple one.

What shocked me wasn't the dislike, it was the vitriol that accompanied it. For once, I thought, I understood what Prince fans look like to others. The incredulity I usually feel when someone says they don't like Prince was matched and returned with interest. I was really thrown. A cautionary tale, maybe, for all those missionaries out there pushing the purple vibe... Don't push too hard, you don't know how scary you look when you go evangelical on someone's ass.

The biggest irony is that all the Red Hot Chili Peppers worship Prince, especialy Anthony and Flea. I wonder if the stupid bitch is even remotely aware of this.

I see your point Gooch ,
This confronting situation is indeed a clear example of a useless , agressive , but foremost a narrowminded reaction .
The biker was seemingly f#d-up and first thing what's comes up in his mind is this lame spitting verbal .
For not feeling f#d-up yourself afterwards , you could step up to get it equal in words ( if you're verbally fast and strong ) , should such a situation happen again .
If that's not your cup a tea , then try to forget it ( as hard as that is ).

Good luck ,
100MPH .

I'm 23 and a huge Prince fan!! smile I guess i'm kind of young to be a Prince fan and everyone always reacts so weird to it. haha I don't really care what other people think, but people definitely find it odd. I don't think people respect him enough as a musician. I think he deserves alot more credit than he receives.

Besides being a "Prince-hater", I don't think she was a stupid bitch... an ignorant, narrow-minded one, but not stupid. I'd still speak to her if I saw her again... I just wouldn't talk about music.
