sign o the times overrated everytime i'm listening " sign o the times "
i think :well, its an ok album but no way it is his best ever album. he had better songs before and after sign o the times album. he played better guitar before and after sign o the times. he did nothing new on that album.i find it to be pretty conventional. most of the songs sound dated. there are few standout tracks like :sign o the times if i was your girlfriend, ballad of dorothy parker, the cross, adore. but a lot of fillers like play in the sunshine,it,forever inmy life. i mean i like that album,i enjoy listening to songs on it. but to say it's the best ever by prince??? the rainbow children kick sign o the time's ass, thats for sure.

I hate when people say it's so "dated". The only thing that should be "dated" is food. TV shows, music, movies, it does not matter what decade it comes from... good is good no matter what.

Sly Stone made a similar statement back at Woodstock and it was as true then as it always has been.

Obviously you did not get the privilage of getting the double lp at the time of release and putting down the needle and listening to all four sides and realizing that this is the hardest working man in show business. It's a great album and why you want to berate it I'll never know. [Edited 9/19/05 21:52pm]

[Edited 9/19/05 21:52pm] Does listening on LP magically make it better? And it shouldn't matter when u listen to it. The first time is the first time. On my first listen I wasn't at all impressed. Now, I think it's awesome(because they all are really), but no where near his best. [Edited 9/20/05 0:50am] Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

It's Overrated no doubt. But it does hav some of his best songs (Starfish & Coffee, IT, Sign etc.) I just think it's way over praised and there is much better prince albums. It's definately overrated. It's OK but it's nowhere near his best. It's a sign of the times alright...."Sign O The 60s" is more like it.
A lot of people on the org act like this album is the Prince "bible" but in reality, a lot of the general public was through with Prince by the time this album was released. I remember going to see the concert movie on opening night and there were about 15 people in the theater. That's a long fall from the days when the theaters were being sold out night after night like they were when "Purple Rain" opened. Lots of people like to listen to the opinions of music critics that praise the album as Prince's best work by making statements like...."This album is pure art. It's Prince's best work ever. This album shows what a musical genius Prince is" The truth of the matter is that most of these same critics had never heard of Prince before "Little Red Corvette" and they have their own personal tastes just like everyone else. Whatever you feel about the album, listen to it for yourself, with your own ears, and form your own opinion that is uninfluenced by anyone else's. Then, stick by it. Andy is a four letter word.

[Edited 9/19/05 21:52pm] Does listening on LP magically make it better? And it shouldn't matter when u listen to it. The first time is the first time. On my first listen I wasn't at all impressed. Of course the music is the same, but your perceptions of it are different. Hearing 'Sign' when it was first released you had no expectations that "it was Prince's masterpiece, his definitive work, blah blah blah." Time, critics, and fans hadn't cast it as anything in particular, it was just a new Prince album. And the lyrics to the title track were certainly more exciting at the time. They weren't a snapshot of the late 80s, they were current. I can't imagine the line about a rocket ship exploding being quite as impactful to a listener in the 2000s as it was to listeners in spring 1987, just barely a year after the Challenger exploded. The same way a song about Hurricane Katrina released now wouldn't be as powerful in 2023. And a reference to AIDS in a pop song? It was unheard of. I know all of that doesn't mean you can't appreciate it if you hear it for the first time after-the-fact, and I truly don't mean to sound condescending, but if you weren't there you really can't appreciate how ground-breaking it was at that time. Just like how I can appreciate how exciting the Beatles and Elvis were, and I can enjoy their music and see why they were so popular, but I'll never know what it was like to see them on Ed Sullivan for the first time. We look at the past through a different set of eyes, and listen through a different set of ears. [Edited 9/20/05 5:02am]

Couldn't have said it better!!!! It also depends on how old U are at the moment an album hits the stores, I mean;when I was 16 and PR came out I listened 2 it every moment, in my room, on walkman. And reading the lyrics over and over. These days I still try 2 do the same thing but there are so many things I have 2 do these days(work,girlfriend,kid)...it's just different U know??? [Edited 9/19/05 21:52pm] Co Sign!! SOTT is a masterpiece. There wasn't anything like it at the time and I don't think there's anything like it even now.

Best Prince Album hands down. Plus this was his most creative period that we know of. The diversity of the songs at this time were astounding. Please tell me you have heard the bootlegs from the 1986/1987 period. If you haven't then you honestly don't know what you are talking about and I not being mean, just truthful. Go back and explore that time period and I'm sure that you will appreciate it more. __________________________________________________

"everytime i'm listening " sign o the times "

The banished one- You are right - It doesn't contain his all time greatest song - It doesn't feature his best guitar work ever - He didn't really do anything we hadn't seen before. -It sounds as dated as any albums older than 10 years will. The genius of "Sign O' The Times" is that it's whole is MUCH greater than the sum of it's parts. You aren't looking at the big picture. You don't understand why everyone thinks "Sign O' The Times" is so great and you've missed the point. The album is heralded as being one of the best ever because it basically is two things: A. It basically represents everything that Prince ever was and still is about. All of the sex, the spirituality, the funk/rock/pop/folk/jazz/blues, the imagery, the gender bending, the attitude, the look-it was all there. Never before, and never since has Prince laid it all out there on one album. It had the rawness of his early stuff, but a new sophistication and a worldy maturity. No one before or since had so successfully straddled so many genres on a pop album and still made it uniquely their own. Prince did that. B. It also was a damn good summary of every type of pop music genre that had come before him. You listen to "Sign O' The Times" and you hear: Jimi, James Brown, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Stevie, Elvis, Parliment, The Stones, Joni, Dylan, Motown etc. Yet,it was new-it was different. It is all still Prince---it all came from one man. Amazing. Does "Sign O' The Times" have to be every Prince fans favorite album? No. I am glad it's not your favorite--differences makes the world more interesting. I'm just trying to shed light on why others dig it so much and hold it up as Prince's (and maybe popular music's) best ever. [Edited 9/20/05 6:51am] "New Power slide...."
