Rediscovering prince

Hi everybody,

it's been a while since I really posted here, but as some might recall I had the oppurtunity to talk with Prince during the ONA tour and managed to see 4 ONA shows and 2 aftershows. I guess that was a kind of a Prince overdose cuz the following months I was listening less and less to P's music. The only album I could listen was TRC (it's such a damn fine album). But even that one escaped my cdplayer. Then he released News, nice I thought, P is experimenting cool, it was a nice interlude while waiting for the next real album. However that album proved 2 be a great disappointment. Musicology was nothing short of a rehash of old P and lackluster arrangements. there were only a few songs that could spark any interest from me. I had it with P.
This guy was on a roll!! NPGMC new music every month, then all of a sudden a supurb album TRC, he was on top of his game and in control. But then it started slipping again. NPGMC only scratches the surface of what it could be. And P was playing big stades with a greatest hits tour. Had he sold out? He cashed in big last year, but did the fans, who supported him thru his difficult years get their share of the cake? No we got bored music and some below par songs from NPGMC.
I turned to other music again. Mainly Zappa and 60's psych. Then last week I picked up my Sign "0" the times lp (after reading the topic on P rog about if it was overrated or not) and listened to it. I mean really listened to it. I was moved. It sounded so good and fresh again. Now I've dug up my P collection and am rediscovering his music once again smile

I just wanted to say, I still think Musicology sucks, but I believe he is capable of delivering a supurb album once more. Now if only it didn't take so long wink

I hear ya. I'm rediscovering the man myself, but I'm talking pre-Larry material. Not just the albums, but also the studio and live bootlegs, videos and things like the 12 inch singles. Actually since I started listening to that stuff again I realized even more than ever before how stale his music sounds these days.

Prince could do another amazing album if it wasn't for the fact that he doesn't have the desire to really dig down deep and come up with another gem. When an artist feels he no longer has anything to prove, he might as well be dead...like Elvis.
Repo Man's got all night, every night.

I agree and yes the old 12"es sound so cool, better than the remixes we got later...

Ahhhhh.....it's always so SWEET to redicover Prince.....EXCITING! That's what made me recently join the org. I've been on a Prince break for a couple years up until recently. Musicology didn't last long in my cd player either. I liked it, but it wore off faster than most of his better albums (IMO). So, I too, have been combing back through my old albums. I probably only have about 1/2 his albums, so I still have some discovering to do.

TRC will be my next album (I have mainly older stuff) since I've been hearing such good things about it.

wink Anyways, I can't help but asking, since I'm new to the org.....WHAT WAS THIS CONVERSATION W/PRINCE LIKE?!?!?! lol

eek I have to know! Give DETAILS if you have the time.....

I was recently exposed to a whole catalog of his music that I never heard before. To hear him back in 1983/1984...outtakes like Sexual Intercourse...it makes you long for those days. I'm all for growth and transition, but somewhere along the line he lost his "fuck you" attitude and with that, lost his edge. I can barely listen to Musicology...with the exception of ICP&C. It's too polished, too studio, too soft. Unfortunately, Prince's best music has never been heard by the general public. For this reason, he will be one of those artists who isn't truly appreciated until he's dead...like Elvis.
