Private Joy I've always liked this song, but I was never sure.....
Is Prince talking about some chick he's doing or is he talking about masturbation?

Is Prince talking about some chick he's doing or is he talking about masturbation? Masturbation. co-sign I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG. I think that Private Joy, Let's Work and Sexuality are my faves on the CONTROVERSY album. M MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! He's not talking about a girl, and he's not talking about masturbation. In the song lyrics, the word "orgasmatron" is used. This would refer to some kind of futuristic sex toy.
I think we may need to find a way to do a Prince 101 class on here, to school ya'll on some of this stuff.

Now this is a great thread topic - but we're really dancing around the song. Here is my two cents: Private Joy is my second favorite song on the album for several reasons (Do Me Baby is the first):
- It is commercial, yet unique. P did a lot of neat tricks (loops, drums-on-drums, and heavy, heavy overdubs). - It's fun yet makes you think about it's meaning - on the first listen or two. - It meshes well with the tracks that follow. Bottomline: It's just a damn good song, light, funny, and well-composed. I always wonder what P thinks when he puts together a song and I speculate that he was thinking: Now for some fun, pop stuff. Yeah, I do that too:)

I wonder if that song was ever released as a single? If not it should've been. Prince's keyboard playing is tight. As for the meaning of the song, I always thought it was about a woman, but then again I would have to look at the lyric sheet because some of the words are hard to understand.- It is commercial, yet unique. Private Joy and Lets Work are my faves on the album, and they're awesome to do some cardio to.
I'm sure the song was meant as just a fun pop song.....but he's talking about SOMEthing..... "If anybody asks you.....you belong to Prince" a chick? "Little baby..... GET UP" his penis? "Such a pretty toy" a blow up doll?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm puzzled by this thread. I thought it was so obviously about masturbation. "my little lover" "little secret" ""only I know what turns you on." "get up... come on baby get up." "ain't gonna tell nobody nobody about my little pretty toy"
plus the title... "private joy"...

It's actually about Prince's relationship with Susan Moonsie, whom he was dating at the time. He wanted to keep their relationship private from her family, or something. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I love this song to bits.
Around 86, there was a cover (remix?) in the UK. That's when I knew for sure it wasn't just me who thought this song was special.

Yeah, I read in "Dance Music Sex Romance" that it's about his girl at the time, Susan Moonsie, who was also in Vanity 6. I guess the song is open to interpretation but even before I read this I always thought it was about a girl and not about masturbation.

It's about vaginas.
Private Joy is his name for a vagina. Prince was obsessed with vaginas back in his early career.

It cant be about jacking off because he already has a cut on the album about that and that isn't a Prince-like move to have 2 songs about jacking off on the same album. Also, he uses the term "Girl", now unless P is a HERME then I believe we can rule masturbation out. Honestly, it sounds like some chick he's diggin' and he calls the broad his own Private Joy. In Prince a documentary and Prince a pop life, hes either talking about a 1. Woman, 2. Masturbation, 3. A sexual aid or mayb all 3. I don't reckon its masturbating, I doubt Prince needed the solitary vice on the album (Controversy) and remember the song did follow 'Do Me Baby' of all things!
I don't think three either, hes only ever mentioned magazines as aids, on the songs Darling Nikki "I saw her in a hotel lobby, masturbating to a magazine" and Strolling on D and P "We can buy a dirty magazine, laugh behin' it while we eatin' ice cream". And I have never heard Prince sing about other aids excluding beds and bathtubs in a song, being used on his partner or himself. So its a definitely a WOMAN. But who I don't know, its after Gayle Chapman and his infatuation with Patrice Rushen (I wanna be your lover was written about her). Its too early for Vanity and Lisa was simply a lesbian apparently. Wendy wasnt in the group yet. Dez was still playing her role. So its a definitely a girl, but Who may be you know. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Its an alright song, but after Controversy, Sexuality and Do Me Baby this song is nearly forgotten especially when its followed by the dreadful Ronnie Talk 2 Russia. Do Me Baby is the best track and I think Private Joy is the conclusion to it, after she likes to sit and watch before the Private Joy starts! 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

I agree with TheCrucialExperience. I always presumed a girl was his private joy...someone that he didn't want anyone else to get with...she was for him alone. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I always looked at that song as the one where Prince mentioned his own name. He seems to do that once on just about every album.

He's EASILY one of the most narcissistic muthafuckas on the planet. "But what of black women? . . . I most sincerely doubt if any other race of women could have brought its fineness up through so devilish a fire." -- W.E.B. Du Bois --
