Another Lonely Christmas...

I just discovered this one on iTunes, and I an totally in love with it... What's the story behind this song? It sounds fantastic, and the lyrics are wonderful.

Sorry, but it's true. For example, P is actually still sighted -- even after drinking banana daiquiris 'til he was blind.

One of the reasons Prince was so incredible during that time. His b-sides were way way better than most peoples best songs.

Anyone´s best songs. The Purple Rain era B-sides are still absolutely amazing. I just finished listening to "Erotic City" and "She's Always In My Hair" and even if I have been listening to them for a decade or so I'm still totally eek

...oh, and you need to get The Hits/The B-Sides set. "Another Lonely Christmas" is just the beginning of onslaught of B-Sides that will kick. Your. Ass.

Great, great song. One of P's most heartfelt sung songs. Fiction or not. I love this tune. From the same slice of the instumental version of "God". Similar production. His playing is on target. This, "God" and "Lady Cab Driver" are the best examples of P alone, in the studio, on all of the instruments. His playing is authenic. Just straight, old fashioned recording. Lay down the piano, drums, bass, guitar, keys, vocals, and mix. Bang, there's a song. And what a great one too.

Well, I agree with you to a point. It's one of his most heartfelt songs - in the Prince persona. But Prince the person would probably look back on that like Madonna does with Like A Virgin.

I made my own follow up CD to PR.
It looks like this

Hello
She's Always In My Hair
Girl
Erotic City
17 Days
Another Lonely Christmas
God
4 The Tears In Your Eyes

This is the song that turned me into a fan, back in late '84.

and it's true, if you've only heard the 4:20 version on the hits/b-sides, you really haven't heard the song at all.
Keep your headphones on.

Blackguitaritz expound on the Another Lonely Christmas session -- I am educated, I thought that was him with The Revolution. If you have any information on this session, please provide. Good post.

It IS the revolution. If you can get ahold of the "Christmas In Uptown" you can listen to the rehearsal and parts of the recording session - the whole disc is him teaching the song to the band.

Another Lonely Christmas is a great song. Always loved it. I did wonder, too, if there's any basis at all in actual people he knew or knows, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was total fiction.
Illustrator - I'm feeling that PR followup CD. I think I'll make a CD of that. Thanks.
And I'd love to get a hold of that Christmas in Uptown disc. Wow! Release some of THAT stuff, Prince. smile
