It is not so bad, or even bad.
It is musically, and in terms of conceptual unity and vision, quiet excellent. too bad the vibe and message ain't only that i am digging one-tenth the way i still dig LOVESEXY.

TRC does seems to in certain songs revel in its anger and divisiveness, empty dogmatism, and self-righteously so.

it does have some great great great music,
but also some throwaway music.

I just found that thread because I saw you posted here, so without you I would have missed it wink . Like I said I am not that interested anymore in Prince and his music, so I I hardly read this forum anymore.

Sometimes I wonder why I do. sigh

The General Discussion is more me, you know that. But sometimes one is so amazed by the ignorance and fanaticism displayed here, I feel like I've got to at least show that some Prince fans are intelligent, y'know. "Wave the flag a little bit." wink

Scifinerd- I am sorry if I have hurt your feelings. I feel that I have engaged you in intelligent discussion and been very fair in my arguments and critiques of your view points. I have given you clear reasoning and have backed up all of my claims with some type of proof.

I am not so appreciative of the fact that, because I don't see TRC as an album of hatred and ignorance, that you need to insinuate that I am being ignorant or overly fanatical. I have already stated that I don't really care for "The Rainbow Children", I simply think that it is misguided to view the album as being one of hate and separation.

Furthermore, I will continue to maintain my viewpoint that only a fraction of Prince fans have misread these lyrics as being racist/sexist/hateful etc. I even gave you a link to reviews (which you had not been able to find) to further illustrate this point. You on the otherhand, have not really offered any sort of reasoning to why you think this album is blatantly ugly and hateful. You told me of some sites you found that would support your statements, yet, you refuse to show them to me.

So again, I thank you for the discussion and I am sorry that you don't feel as though I have engaged you in a fair and intelligent manner.

Also, I am not sure why you are posting the lyrics with your own changes. Or is this what you are actually hearing? Seriously, if this is what you are actually hearing than I can totally see where you get your interpretation from.

Why, thank you. You are one of the intelligent ones, I'll admit. nod

scififilmnerd- I wish that you'd have simply given me links to the reviews/sources that you had found that helped your interpretation of "the Rainbow Children" instead of posting a confusion of lyrics that never were. Anyhow good day to you and good chat. (Let me know what you think of those reviews and if you can find that woman's article or the website where JW's call themselves "The Rainbow Children". The rainbow you mentioned before was universal to all believers of The Old Testament. Peace.

No luck retracing the JW/Rainbow Children stuff, but I did find the story of that woman. Here it is: www.citypages.com/databan...asp?page=2

P.S.

Excellent-thank you much. I actually had read this before "city pages" is a MPLS paper (local to me).

There is no doubt that Prince hit a superpreachy patch in 2000 or so (although I'd say his been "preachy" for a lot longer than that. This article doesn't really illustrate the hatefulness and anit-semitism that you say is blatant on "The Rainbow Children". What it does is elaborate on a fact that we all sort of know : Prince is a control freak who likes to mess with the media/reporters etc. Prince has rarely given a straight up interview where he is not being "enigmatic and preachy." I think you'll find that if you read some earlier interviews/articles (even from the 80's) that you'll find that Prince often speaks as if he is on a throne. This not just do to his JW faith.

In any case, I still maintain that Prince being a controlling jerk (as this article illustrates) is nothing new. However, I still maintain that lableing TRC as being obviously and blatantly hateful/racist/etc. is quite a stretch.

Interesting side note: During one of the celebrations (in the midst of Prince becoming a JW) he'd still perform Darlin Nikki. I honestly don't think that his faith has greatly altered his Prince persona. I think it is more due to age, and if anything, he has really mellowed out (think of last summer).

Oh, you mean the "teasing version" of Darling Nikki or the full-blown one? biggrin

I think on the 1998 tour he played the "kind-of Darling Nikki" to prove to his opening act Larry Graham that he, Prince, was "in charge." With Prince it is often double-sided ("he has two sides" and all that), like releasing Scarlet Pussy (which Sheila E. didn't want released) on a Lovesexy B-side accredited to Camille, or putting Wasted Kisses at the end of NPS. I see that as his opposing side occassionally rearing it's head. biggrin

By the same token, I think some not so nice side of him reared its head on TRC, but I'll succumb to your way of thinking in that I agree that it isn't "obviously and blatant hateful", but I still think that it is about his Jehova faith, that "the banished ones" are those that "resist the accurate understanding of God" and that he wants us all to unify under the Jehova faith, plus that it is obviously sexist. biggrin

So of course I feel ideologically opposed to the album. It is the "devil come dressed as light", to use his own term, by trying to sell Jehova beliefs and laws disguised as something else, however thinly. I think he had good intentions, but... "the road to hell" and all that. shrug

And, yes, he has mellowed out, it would appear. Or else I wouldn't have been here. wink

The rainbow has signifigance to EVERYBODY who believes in The Old Testament. It's not just a Jehovah's Witness pact with God. Shit, this is Old Testament so even Jewish people can believe in the rainbow in this context.

I'm not even a Christian and I know that the rainbow was God's promise to Noah and mankind that he wouldn't flood the earth again. I repeat, this is not just exclusive to JW's.

Oh. Okay. sigh

In my Christian upbringing we were taught that the New Testament was what mattered. I always wondered why they had the old one in the Bible, then. lol

But I still think The Rainbow Children is a thinly disguised metaphor for Jehova's Witnesses. biggrin

I don't think it was the teasing version. I mean, he had Geneva (the dancer) with him and he humped the stage etc. Is that teasing?

"But I still think The Rainbow Children is a thinly disguised metaphor for Jehova's Witnesses."

I understand that. I don't take it as a metaphor for just JW's for many reasons. The main one being Prince's inclusion of Dr. King's speech (specifically the words ) which calls for Unity between all races, religions, and colors. To me, that's Prince saying, as usual, down with the devil, GodisLove and LoveisGod. Cometogether as one.

- I agree completely with you. I don´t understand why some fans were so obssessed about Prince´s JW thing. As far as I know, he never mentioned that he is a JW so blatantly, even on interviews. He only talks a lot about God, and that´s fine for me. Better than talking about incest, drugs and violence.

Rainbow Children is about people of different colors and races being together as one. Nothing more than this.

TRC is a fine album, and i really enjoy hearing it played live. i like the compositions on the album - it's the most challenging music he'd recorded in years - and the lyrics, while kinda ranty and a little more idiosynchratic than usual, were at least engaging and even clever in parts.

it's an interesting album - i kinda think of it as his underground manifesto in which he got everything out of his system before preparing for a huge commercial comeback...he got all of the conspiracy theories, WB rants, religious speeches, etc., completely out of his system with this album and the ONA tour, and was able to clear his throat and refashion himself as a shiny happy rock star for the musicology project (though there was a bit of ranting here and there in 2004...it IS prince, after all).

i don't think it was meant to be a major mainstream success...ONA was an album for prince - conceptually and musically. it was a man coming to terms with his new spirituality, and with a new direction in his career. he was shrugging off old problems like an old skin and facing a different perspective on his world. kinda heavy stuff, really.

the only thing i don't like about ONA, and the thing that keeps me from listening to it more often, is the narration. it really annoys me. if a version were released without the fat albert/darth vader narrator, i'd be a happy camper.

Mayb I need 2 listen 2 it again...

Ah, yes. Another Jehova cliché. Like the "one truth" and "one God". biggrin

So although Prince's message on The Rainbow Children appears to be one of unity and love, I think it is implied in the subtext of the album being a story of Jehova's Witnesses, that the catch is that the call for unification is one under the Jehovan truth/God. As opposed to the Christian God, or the Mormon God, or the Muslim God or the Buddhist God and so forth...

TRC is like Pro-Family groups that seeks to exclude while claiming to be on a mission of love. So if you don't accept the RIGHT (Jehovan) way, you're "a banished one" by default. neutral

So, please explain to me the difference of Jehova, the Christian god, the Mormon god, the muslim god. And, please be so kind and explain to me the "Buddhist god".

Oh. Okay. sigh

In my Christian upbringing we were taught that the New Testament was what mattered. I always wondered why they had the old one in the Bible, then. lol

Interesting! I went to a catholic school and never heard this. biggrin The bible is the bible, you know. Being the centerpiece of a believe and being "what matters" are two different things...

I am ideologically against sects because I'm a strong believer in free thinking and free will. biggrin

First of all, it is very questionable to call JWs a sect. According to a recent court trial in Germany, they are some kind of church. I'm not a JW, but we should somehow stick to the facts imo...

And that you are "ideologically" against them says pretty much. So this thread is something like your own personal "Rainbow Children" then? biggrin

Why don't you just relax? You think that this record is bullshit? O.k.! You want to explain other people on this board why? O.k.! I think that we got your point. But I don't want to be put in any anti-semitic connection just because I like this damn record. Just like "ooh, how can you people overlook it?"

The General Discussion is more me, you know that. But sometimes one is so amazed by the ignorance and fanaticism displayed here, I feel like I've got to at least show that some Prince fans are intelligent, y'know. "Wave the flag a little bit." wink

So, please be so kind and explain to me who on this particular thread is ignorant or a fanatic and who is not intelligent.

Btw, calling other people ignorant or fanatics indeed is true tolerance in the tradition of "Lovesexy" and of the free mind... eek

BTW-

What was the message of Annie Christian?

The song is all about Prince putting the blame of evil on, and calling for the death of the anti-Christ. Now to me, that says he wants the devil to be gone. However, it is quite interesting that those lyrics aren't misconstrued by fans to be seen as "Prince wants to kill anyone who is not with or for Jesus" and "Prince thinks that any non-Christian people are the cause of the worlds evil,.. killing Lennon, and black children,etc.".

The message of Annie Christian is about how you should fear people whom call themselves a "Christian" when attempting to justify non-Christian acts.

He just uses the metaphor of a crazed stalker in place of a religious zealout.
