Musicology isn't Prince's worst album, but it has the fewest stand out songs. I'm not here to talk about the album as a whole. It's decent.
It has no truly special songs on it though. It has no real stand outs that can stand on their own and remind you that Prince is a genius. Even his seemingly least popular albums seem to have had one or two stunners that caught people's ears and stood out as special gems amongst hardcore fans. For You-Crazy You, Baby Batman-Scandalous, Electric Chair Graffiti Bridge-Joy In Repetition, The Question Of U Diamonds and Pearls-Cream, Insatiable -Damn U, 7, And God Created Woman Come-Pheromone, Solo, Dark Chaos and Disorder-Dinner With Delores, Into The Light/I Will Emancipation-The Love We Make, Soul Sanctuary, etc. NewPower Soul-Come On, Wasted Kisses, The One Rave-I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore TRC-The Sensual Everafter, Everlasting Now, Last December If I'm slightly off with one of the songs I listed or forgot to mention, I'm sorry. You get the idea though. What does Musicology have? It's consistent, but not one song on it is original sounding or especially creative. Not one will ever be a fan fave or even considered special. BTW I didn't include NEWS cause it's just not a really fair comparison. I'm talking about all his conventional albums where he actually sang. Call My Name, Musicology & Dear Mr. Man

Call My Name is a combination of every love ballad he's ever composed, and those were all slightly better.
Musicology is a generic JB retread that anyone could've done. Dear Mr. Man has simplistic lyrics and was done a million times better by Marvin Gaye. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Seems I remember ppl round here gushing over A Million Days alot.
My personal favorite track is The Marrying Kind, but I'm sure thats much too poppy and predictable to be on of those fan faves If you will, so will I

I gushed over A Million Days too when I first got the album.
All the songs get old so quickly, though. They're all inoffensive but disposable. A Million Days is a less energetic version of Dolphin. It's really not that strong of a rock ballad. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Call My Name is a great song... i'm sorry u cannot see that. Musicology is 2 funky! only Prince could do that. dear Mr. Man is one of Prince's most mature songs.

Call My Name is nothing he hadn't done a billion times before.
For a fresh sounding and hypnotizing romantic ballad, I'll stick with Soul Sanctuary. Musicology is the most generic Prince song possible. It's nothing any of JB's imitators couldn't easily do. How is Dear Mr. Man mature? Saying that there's no sense in voting is mature?! Is "We tired 'o' y'all!" that mature theme you're referring to? It's better than the rainbow children.
All the songs are good but not classic. Should have had more John Blackwell drumming though!

[Edited 9/21/05 12:11pm] Well let's take a look at the "classic" song "mature" lyics When Doves Cry: "Animals srike curius poses" Alphabet St: "Yeah, Yeah, Yeeeaaah! Let's Go Crazy: "I'm excited, i don't know why, maybe it's because, were all gonna die" Anie Christian: "AC wanted, to be a big star, so she moved to Atlanta, and bought a blue car" Sexuality "You don't need no money, u don't need no clothes" great songs but MATURE LYRICS?? (with the eception of WDC) [Edited 9/21/05 12:26pm]

All the songs are good but not classic. Should have had more John Blackwell drumming though! what makes you think it's better than The Rainbow Children? That's an album with some truly great songs on it and with a lot of stellar performances from Prince as well has his band. i agree, they are two totally different albums conceived in two completely different mindsets. however Rainbow Children is by means of songcraft, influence, instrumentation, sheer energy, inventiveness, inspiration, daring and performance, and last but not least cohesiveness (Musicology is nice but it lacks a soul) The Rainbow Children beats Musicology. looking back in hindsight, even Rave, how ever much we have joked about it, is a better album than Musicology. Because that one too has a more daring execution and some strive to it. Musicology is filled with great tunes, instant grooves that jam very nicely. But they're all so easy to forget. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I agree. The album is good as a whole, but the songs can't stand on their own. They're not up to a PRINCE standard of greatness, which lets face it, is higher than other artists.

(with the eception of WDC) [Edited 9/21/05 12:26pm] This is one of the weakest arguments I've ever read at The Org. When Doves Cry: You took one single sentence that wasn't even a part of the whole line. You just conveniently edited out the part where the line becomes meaningful. Alphabet St.: This song isn't meant to be mature, it's meant to be fun. It's also incredibly original, in that "Alphabet St." isn't what it appears to mean when you hear the title. This is a terrible excuse to defend a serious political song like Dear Mr. Man. There's no fair lyrical comparison possible here. Annie Christian: This song has very clever lyrics. "Annie Christian, Annie Christ. Until you're crucified, I'll live my life in taxi cabs." But did I ever say it was incredibly mature? Another silly example on your part. Sexuality: Once again, I never mentioned this song as being mature. Another stupid example. And once again, comparing its lyrics to that of a political song about the state of the world is ridiculous. These are all convenient examples to make it look like Prince has and always will be at the same level of maturity in his lyricism. It's not true at all. Sign 'O' The Times' lyrics are incredibly mature and thought provoking; ten times moreso than Dear Mr. Man. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Musicology, ICPC, The Marrying Kind, IIWTMIYL, WDYWM2D, Dear Mr Man.
All standouts in my book "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

I have to agree with The Golden Glove dude .....
Call My Name is a top class tune , i know a few non Prince fans who love that tune . Musicology the single gets better everytime i hear it & Reflection etc are some really decent tunes . I will agree that it aint as strong as some ,it could actually do with a couple of The Chocolate Invasian tracks ..... this is a much stronger album with about 6 standout tracks from only 10 tunes BUT i would say that CMN & MUSICOLOGY are standouts IMO Live4Love

Musicology has no really weak songs, and also no stand out songs I agree.
Except for 'Reflection', it gives me that special [i]Prince feeling and I always put it on Prince-compilation cd's I make for other people as the last song.

I truly love Reflection. I may be alone, but that track really touches me because it's kind of like Prince coming to terms with getting older for the first time.
i really love the way it's so understated too. The way it ends is just brilliant. Sometimes I just wanna go sit out on the stoop and play my guitar... watch all the cars go by.... I just love that. I'm testing postive 4 the funk

But it's a fact that it must be difficult after 28 years and 20-something albums 2 put out something that "doesn't sound like"or "reminds us of..." WDUWM2D reminds people of Ballad Of DP Million Days refers to Dolphin The Stones also still sounds like The Stones and I could swear I've heard their new song be4.But is that bad? Love4oneanother
