1800 New Funk - revisiting

1. Minneapolis - MPLS
2. Hollywood - George Clinton
3. Love Sign - Nona Gaye & The Artist
4. If I Love You Tonight - Mayte
5. Color - Phil Upchurch
6. Together - N.P.G.
7. Standing at the Altar - Margaret Cox
8. You Will Be Moved - Mavis Staples
9. 17
10. Woman's Gotta Have It - Nona Gaye
11. Minneapolis (Reprise) - MPLS

Released: 1994

Not seen many discussions on this, and that may be because people would rather forget it. lol So what's the general feeling?

MPLS, Hollywood, Lovesign (well it's better than the crap version on Crystal Ball anyway), 17, You will be moved. music

All of the above, i like.

All of the others, i was originally a bit whofarted at. Now, i'm much more neutral about them.

And let's face it, Mayte's vocal on the backing track that is "If i love u 2nite" is not as pretty as Prince's. smile

I must say that in general, the drums sound very tinny on this album. confused

In fact, it doesn't flow in the slightest as an album, but i suppose that wasn't the intention, given it's just a compilation of tunes.

Haven't listened to this in a long time. The first 3 tracks are great, funky and in your face, the rest just leave me a little bored.

Love the ones you mentioned, especially 'Love Sign' and 'Hollywood'.

'Standing At The Altar' is a great pop tune, though; just a pity Margie Cox is singing it. confused

It's an okay album. Most of the songs are too good to keep on the shelf and not good enough to be released on a Prince album. At least that's what I thought at the time. Of course in retrospect some of the lesser songs would have outdone most things released between 1997-2005.
Repo Man's got all night, every night.

It's a good set really, not something I tend to listen to, can't remember the last time I did, but most of the tracks are of decent enough quality to merit inclusion.

The gem is Standing At The Altar, if it had been promoted well, it could have been a hit, it was very commercial.

Love me some Margie/Ta Mara love

i shall dust off my 1800 New Funk broken CD case, retrieve the CD and give Standing at the altar another go, me thinks. wink

I must confess i even bought Mayte's single If i love u 2nite, which i believe had a spanish version on it or something? Maybe i'll dig that up too. lol

Yeah, Prince should have checked with you first to see what you already had before putting the compilation together.
