I think it has some great songs:

New Power Generation (nobody ever mentions this track - I love it)
Thieves in the Temple
We can Funk
Joy in Repitition
Question of U

Thieves in the Temple is flat out terrible. I bought this album when it came out and only recently have I managed to actually listen to this song all the way through.

I do think there are some good tracks on the album though (particularly the stuff by the Time, eg, Sex Machine) and Still Will Stand All Time is simply gorgeous.
I'm testing postive 4 the funk

confused I don't care much for the album as a whole. Joy in Repition is one of my fave Prince songs.....but the rest of it is pretty lame to me. But different strokes.

wink WHAT'S COOL TO YOU, MIGHT BE STRANGE TO ME lol (I know that was corny, but I couldn't resist)

One of my favourite prince albums, highly underrated. It has some of his best 90's songs and some of his best ever aswell.

Can't Stop This Feelin I got
New Power Generation
Elephants And Flowers
Round 'N' Round
Melody Cool
Love Machine
The Question Of U
Tick, Tick, Bang
We Can Funk
Joy In Repetition
Thieves in The Temple
Still Would Stand All Time

All of those are great tracks and the reason it's one of prince's best!

I agree: it's a very spiritual & funky album! I find it not 2 have aged that much 15 years later... it sounds out of time, sort of, not that much related 2 the music of its time...

I'd add that at the time it was released, the hype was 2 shit on Prince... saying that he wasn't what he used 2 b & all that... I'm sure many critics had decided it would b crap b4 they even listened 2 it! i hate it when people's & journalist's comments r related 2 a "thought fashion" !!!

New Power Generation
Thieves in the Temple
The Question of U
Joy in Repetition
Elephants & Flowers
Still Would Stand All Time

Those are all great songs. Shake, We Can Funk and Love Machine are also fun. The rest of the album is really spotty and often poor.

If you left off the non-Prince trax, cept for Release it cuz that song is the shiznix, and added some more Prince trax this would be a classic album.

I really didn't like the Album or the film.

The beard and the clothes wasn't a good look and why can't you hear George Clinton on WE CAN FUNK???

I actually like most of the album a lot, though I think it would've been
better split into 2 seperate releases... A 'Prince' album and a 'soundtrack'
album.

Prince - New Power Generation
1. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got
2. We Can Funk (featuring George Clinton)
3. The Question Of U
4. Elephants & Flowers
5. Joy In Repetition
6. Thieves In The Temple
7. Tick Tick Bang
8. Still Would Stand All Time
9. New Power Generation (parts 1&2)

Graffiti Bridge - original soundtrack
1. Seven Corners - Ingrid Chavez
2. Release It - The Time
3. Round And Round - Tevin Campbell
4. Love Machine - The Time & Elisa Fiorillo
5. Number One - Robin Power
6. Shake! - The Time
7. Melody Cool - Mavis Staples
8. The Latest Fashion - The Time & Prince
9. Graffiti Bridge - Prince, Mavis Staples & Tevin Campbell

I really love the album (...and movie boxed )
but I agree it should have been like a double album with one cd being
the Prince stuff and the other being the movie soundtrack
as Boris has just demonstrated biggrin

I think i might make it a 2 disc tonight, just for the fun of it

It is a masterful album, and it is the last time he did his eighties sound.

His experimental phase slipped off, after this album. And really, he just wrote really catchy and well done songs--well done, full songs, not just beats with words.

I just started 2 like this album after all these years in 1990 when it came out. I never liked it bcuz the movie is so lame. I learned 2 like a couple of tracks.

Joy In Repetition
Tick, Tick, Bang
Question Of U
Elephants And Flowers
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

That one is easy... It's not highly regarded because it's a mix of Prince and other acts. Prince had never done this and has not done it since because he realizes he has to keep "Prince" separate from his protégés. They should not be on the same album unless it's a mere compilation. That's because Prince still tries to be deep and serious while his protégés acts are cartoonish and one dimensional by and large. They dilute the Prince experience. On their own, hoever, they can make for a pretty good record -- it's just not going to be SOTT or 1999.

Therefore, in that sense, this is one of Prince's most ill-conceived albums and its a shame the clumsy format (and the horrible film) wasted some great songs. Joy in Repetition might be loved by fans but very few people know it exists. Same for The Question of U or Elephants & Flowers.

I agree with that, i bet people dont even know some of these tracks exist ..... yet if u took the 9 best tracks off the album ,u would have a classic album lol

I think he just spent far too long on the project, considering it was originally the follow-up to Sign O' The Times, that period feels a life-time away.

It's a testament to how much he believed in the project and concept he was trying to convey, but it went through so many changes, it bore very little resemblence to it's original concept.

The result wasn't bad per se, just a little lost in itself, it's a whole hotch-potch of unfinished ideas and shelved projects - think of all the projects Prince didn't put this much faith behind, maybe it's a good thing he shelves stuff sometimes, because if he didn't, they might end up like Graffiti Bridge.
