It's a good song, but seriously, there was no way it would make the Top 40. It's not like it's been advertised where non-fans will see it. [Edited 9/22/05 17:50pm] Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

shygirl said: Doesn't chart position also depend on radio airplay? I guess I don't really pay enough attention to really care, but the whole thing just seems fishy to me. But then again, this is the music industry we're talking about so, as far as I'm concerned, nothing about it is on the up and up.
That was the beauty of Musicology and the concert CD's. Billboard didn't think Prince would be filling arenas from coast to coast so they said "Sure, we'll let you add your minuscule number of concert CD's to your sales totals". One million CD's later, added to the one million sold, and Prince was having one hell of a laugh. Prince threw S.S.T. together in one night, and it's a great song for a worthy cause. Isn't it enough that thousands have bought the song and the money will be going to help some folk in need? And to those who say S.S.T. isn't good enough to chart higher, I have to ask if you believe every song on the Hot 100 is the greatest song ever recorded? I didn't think so. Well said! In addition, yes, charts are fun to talk about; however, in this case, let's not forget the reason behind this song.

The music is cheap sounding and the style is dated beyond hilariousness! Don't get me wrong. I love the man behind the music and worship a lot of his material, but give me a break! Sometimes I wonder if any of you people get out and listen to NEW music. It's changed. Long gone are the cheesy electric piano breaks and layered solos. It WAS cutting edge about oh, I don't know...25 years ago!!!! C'mon Prince!!! Step up to the plate and write a record that will sell and chart w/out forcing it on unknowing concert goers or riding the tail of a national disaster for christ sakes! You have it in you. Let go. I agree. I know it was for a good cause and all, but the song just sucks. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Over half of the stuff on there is someone else's greatest hits, it's just mangled so badly that u don't know what ur listening to. Bullshit or not, charts are about sales and popularity and that's the way it has always been. When Prince was hot my parents thought he was bullshit too. I understand the old vs new thing (although my dad loved Prince). My point is u cannot call SST a piece of crap simply because it didn't hit. It just doesn't sound like all the music that is popular right now. So it didn't have a cameo by Ciara or the ying yang twins ... The criteria for what hits the charts now and, why SST didn't make it, IMHO does not equal it being garbage. Besides, like stated earlier the real goal was to raise money for Katrina evacuees. Oh, and about the sarcasm... At least he did something. That was thousands of dollars needed that wasn't there b4 and wouldn't have gotten there otherwise. Shake....shake, shake, shake.

I agree, to a point...However, I think that folks need to understand that it's more about musical genres than "today's music"...The bottom line is a (rock) group like U2 is able to prosper 25 years later despite the Linkin Park's and Good Charlotte's of the world...Why? Because rock oriented music, although it goes through its phases, is not looked at purely as a "niche" musical style...in other words, the Neptunes or Rich Harrison doesn't need to be on U2's album in order for it to go platinum plus or get love on MTV..Prince is now strictly looked at as an R&B artist, which means that he is out of the realm of the cutting edge... R&B is a producer-driven genre nowadays...So a song like "SST" never had a chance...Touring is where its at for Prince, not top 40 hits...those days are long gone....

Oh I thought it was shit even before I was thinking about it charting which is generally the last thing on my mind. Charts are about popularity, nothing more, nothing less. My issue with (most) Prince fans is that they say they don't care about charts when the charts aren't favorable to Prince, but when he's topping the charts they love to brag about it. Repo Man's got all night, every night.

Whats going on here, it's for a good cause & thats what counts ..... it is not a great tune but that aint the point
If everyone who was rich contributed some money every1 would b ok , so i dont think the fact that Prince grossed millions in concert sales has any revelance Live4Love

There are a lot of us that know that everything Prince poops out isn't gold. But it's called favortism and sometimes, here on the org, fanaticism. That's why we're fans . We are gonna stand by our boy and brag when things are going good and bitch at whoever is availabe when things are not so great. Annoying? Yes. But it is the nature of the beast. As a legit record company, IIRC, he can submit those numbers so that they count as well. Who knows why/if he does/doesn't submit those numbers? I am MrVictor....
