Prince music in movies

Thanks to some recent talk in chat and doctamario's thread about the Girl6 soundtrack, I'd like to discuss this topic.

With the exceptions of Purple Rain and Sign o'the Times, (and to a degree Under the Cherry Moon and Grafitti Bridge) I feel that Prince's music is used horribly in movies.

It's like the movie making powers that be are trying to boost up the hip-factor by throwing in some Prince tunes, but they either aren't used well or don't fit the story.

Did anyone really buy that Jack as the Joker really dug Prince so much that he'd play them in the poorly produced manner they were used in Batman?

Your thoughts? How would you use Prince music in movies? What's your take?

I'd personally love to see Prince do a Bond theme in the style of Crystal Ball

A "Live and Let Die" kinda thing Jimmy?

For me, it would depend on who is playing James Bond (on the red carpet for the Emmy's I heard that they were considering Hugh Jackman for the role, but he's not doing it) and what the story line would be.

For me, I would not like to see Prince toss out something from the vault. I'd like to see something made for the movie.

rose And thanks, I'm glad you like the thread.

A Live and Let Die style song would be great. He's still got it in him. Beautiful Strange could possibly work as a Bond theme. But like you, I would want the song to be completely fresh and inspired by the movie or genre.

I actually wouldn't be that shocked if it happened. I was at TFI Friday when P performed Pretty Man and Baby Knows in '99 and Pierce Brosnan was on the show. They showed a clip of the movie while P was on stage awaiting his cue (it was a live show) and he seemed to enjoy it and kind of smiled and nodded approvingly at the audience. He was inspired by Batman, no reason another movie couldn't inspire him.

I think he would be well suited to doing a nice love theme in a rom-com. Maybe just P and an acoustic guitar singing in falsetto with heartfelt lyrics...

I've never seen Showgirls.

I did like the use of Prince's music in "The Last Boyscout," but it was just one song...used by a stripper in the strip club. It wasn't a focal part of the movie. (Unless you play the stripper part over and over and over...)

Aaah yes! I remember Bruce Willis' character talking about how his daughter loved Prince.

And in Unbeatable (Is that what it was called? Unbreakable maybe?) his wife said her favourite song ever was Soft and Wet by the Artist Formerly Known as Prince

Thanks for the responses. I guess it can be said that a Prince SONG used in a movie usually works pretty good.

I usually do forget bits...not counting Prince's movies...I know of Batman and Girl6 using all Prince music for the soundtracks and they were not good in my opinion. Not the music, because it is Prince and well 'nuff said, but I'm talking about the way they worked WITH the movie.

JimmyNothing mentioned Prince writing a song for a James Bond movie. Any other thoughts on where Prince's music would work well? Other than strip spots lol

I just checked out www.imdb.com. Private Joy was covered by Cheyne (I have no idea who this is) for Weird Science. The soundtrack listing on imdb.com does not even mention Prince! mad
