I would have mentioned Prince's confusion with religion over the years. He has consistantly used differing visions of what God or what religion represents in his world. His JW phase, is just that. I would not be surprised if he was already turning from the flock and will be a very different man soon.

I finally had a chance to read it...very insightful. I'd give you an "A" wink

I Wanna Be Your Lover came on my stereo shuffle the other day and that line, "I wanna be your brother, I wanna be your mother and your sister, too" made me think of your paper. I know you used Sister as the starting point, but this line could easily foreshadow that song and the whole issue of duality that you discuss.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

"confusion" seems like too much of a judgement to me... i'm not really there for that. more interested in finding continuity, which is there if you look hard enough.

Heiress thank u 4 this insightful essay. I truly enjoyed reading it. U bring up good points! Thumbs up!
i think that Prince is not the only person suffering from a sense of incompleteness. I think everybody has this. I myself have come 2 understand that there's more sides 2 me than I ever imagined. It also ocurred 2 me that some of my "sides" are not free and would love to be... I'm still exploring my psyches and let me tell you it's a fascinating ride!! I hope Prince has found peace and has found a way to unite his psyches so he can finally enjoy peace of mind...

Well, after finally getting to look at the whole paper, I must say that you did an impressive job. My whole life I've spent listening to Prince (I can still remember when I first heard Soft and Wet), I've always tried to decipher some of the many dual/hidden messages he's put into his music, much like everyone else.
Your paper helped show how from early in his career until now how Prince has developed (or evolved) many seemingly contrasting aspects of his music, and himself. It's like you put all the pieces together to help us see the mosaic that has spanned his entire career, and still convey it in a concise, understandable manner. It kinda shows how lucky we are as fans of Prince's music, because he reveals a lot about himself, his mindset, his beliefs at any given point and time, yet still be mysterious and maintain his privacy. Very well done!

Well you know, part of the reason I wanted to do this is that I feel from a young age, I've rather understood where he is coming from, with his work. People say a lot here about his "confusion" or whatever, but I've remarked some strong common threads over the years. On further investigation, more & more of the same... It's kind of like searching for buried treasure, and finding it. lol

I don't think he's been "confused" at all. He certainly has struggled with his love of spirituality and his sexual desires, but all along his goal has been to find a unification of Eros and Agape. Its a classic Romantic motif, and Prince has certainly embraced it fully. Sure, his beliefs have evolved over the years, but that is a good thing. As he learns more, his beliefs SHOULD change. I think his work reflects that evolution quite well, and I really don't see a whole lot of confusion.
