Alphabet St. (my story)

This is the song hat very first go me into Prince about 3 years ago. (i know i'm late)

At the time i was a huge MJ fan nd my mum let me borrow hre CD "The very best of Prince"... i remember picking it up, and when i looked on the back and saw that picture of Prince doing the splits and i saw song titles like "Raspberry beret" "Theives in the temple" "Diamonds and pearls" etc... i knew this was going to be cool!

The songs that realy leaped out at me were 1999, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret and Alphabet St.

Alphabet St. was so wierd but in a good way, it was such a unique and funky style (at the time i didn't even know what funk music was, but i still said it was "funky")... i remember it was such a fun song for a young person full of life and energy... and it stood bove the likes of "Thrller" etc... (just)

cool

That's because you heard it 15 years after it was released. When it came out, this sound was downright experimental and many had to listen to it a couple of times. In that era, music tried to be relentlessly propulsive, you didn't hear too many songs with stop/start rythms, with jangly, minimalist sounds. Since then, hip hop has made it common place to have minimalist yet often intricate rythms, so the song is just easier to understand now.

Probably the song that cemented my interest in Prince. Loved it the first time I heard it on the radio. The first 12inch I ever bought. The b-side had a great weird remix called This Is Not Music This Is A Trip, ever heard that?

The 1st time I heard Alphabet St was in like '95. It's a cool song, but not one of my fav's. I could see how it would be edgy when it actually came out in the 80's though.....ahead of it's time. Just another reminder of Princes greatness!

It took me a while to get into it. I didn't know what to think of it when I first heard it early last year. Until I saw the video, it finally clicked, since I hadn't heard the Lovesexy album then.

Now, it's a favorite amongst many. I dig it.

ironically, ALPHABET ST. has linked me to prince for eyars and years ever since i was young.

the first memory ihad of prince when i was the fetus was when he "went down" after the split on the ALPHABET ST. video { i think it was for the grammys or somethin in '90/'89}

that always stood out to me.

over the years, i would download that song cuz it stood out in my mind and iw anted to hear it.

that song will always be that one song that is responsible for my fandom, actually.

Hey, this got me thinking. It's probably been done b4, but I'm gonna start a "how you became a fan/discovered Prince" thread.
