Bobby Z on purple rain, atwiad, and Parade.

How much did he actually play on these albums? So much of these albums are consumed by drum machines. I know he played on an electronic drum kit, but still.

Good question. Well, it`s easy to tell about Purple Rain - he plays on the tracks that have been recorded on Aug3rd 83 at First Avenue : the title track, I would die 4 U(not much live drumming on that one, are there any cymbals on that one?!??? - i guess not) and Baby i`m a star. Well, the latter track equals I would die 4 U, productionwise. I am 99% sure Prince recorded the drums for Darling Nikki himself, while the ending og Let`s go crazy might have been performed by BobbyZ(at the warehouse, right?)

Pop life does have real drums in it - but the liner notes say Sheila played the drums. I guess he played them himself....as he did on Tambourine. Cool song....Tambourine. Some people refer to it as Trampoline, that might sound quite crazy to you, but some people on the org believe he sings Trampoline. I think that`s very funny.

Parade....Sheila plays on Venus de Milo and Jonathan Melvoin on Do you lie?.
And the first three tracks were recorded by Prince in one continous take.

Well, if you want to hear some cool drumming by Bobby Z from that era i suggest you look for the circulating rehearsals. I love his approach, it`s very unique. It`s funky in its own way.

"he" means Bobby? Well i guess he didn`t. It sounds so much like Prince. I don`t have my "books" with me right now....i am sure someone else will clarify really soon.

Everything u hit on is correct, except that Sheila DID play the skins on "Pop Life". P's drumming style is easy to detect. Just like Stevie's drumming style.

I don't think that Bobby Z really got a chance to show what he could do. All the drum parts on Prince's early stuff are easy to play. Then Prince began using the drum machines. By the time he went back to live drums, Bobby was gone and Sheila had taken over drum duties.
