What if The Dawn had been Emancipation?

To anyone who has heard The Dawn, the 3-disc fan-made release: Wouldn't that have been the most incredible release ever if Prince had made that his "album he was born to make?"

What if Prince had stuck by his word and never recorded anything for WB after he had changed his name? And what if, after somehow breaking his contract with WB, The Dawn was the album he had released as Emancipation.

That would have been an insane release.

Personally, I'd rather have seen Prince release something like 'The Dawn'
instead of Come & The Gold Experience, and kept Emancipation as a single album.
As I think the Come/Gold era produced enough material of a high enough quality
to fill 3 CDs without getting stale.

How realistic was this tracklist? That would be a pretty great release.

It's a mixture of fact and fiction. Prince did indeed toy with the idea of
putting together an album called 'The Dawn' around this time, which would
have featured Come/Gold Era material. But due to the fall out between him
and WB, this idea quickly fell through; as he didn't feel inclined to
supply them with his 'masterwork' and it became apparent that it wouldn't
be practical to wait until he was free to release it. The only legacy of
this concept was the creation of all the NPG Operator segues. This was
actually the 2nd out of 3 attempts to put together an album called
'The Dawn' over the years.

The tracklist for 'The Dawn' is not known, so the circulating version is
merely speculation. But it is based on tracks that were recorded at that
time (with a couple of exceptions). If 'The Dawn' had really been released
then I think the tracklisting would've been quite similar, probably with the
addition of several other unknown/non-circulating tracks. Just looking at the
tracklist for "The Dawn" only gives you half the story anyway, as the real
reason it's become so popular is not the tracklist itself, but the way the
whole project has been sequenced and mixed together.

It sounds like a brilliant piece of work, not my cup of tea, but brilliant nonetheless. But no place for Zannalee!!!!?

Me personally, I would rather listen to Prince's mixes/production/sequence of his own songs.

As for the concept of 'The Dawn' - I kinda liked the idea of releasing [the original versions of] Come / Gold together as originally intended.

Certainly agree though that 'The Dawn' would have been a much better release than the 3-disc Emancipation. Obviously contractual differences at the time prevented this.

Yes. Sad, isn't it. A The Dawn made in 1993 would've been far superior to Emancipation. But... What is, is. neutral

Yeah, it's a shame 'Zannalee' and 'Dark' didn't quite make it onto The Dawn,
but you can't have everything (it does have more songs on it than was originally
intended as it is though).

A great shame but then I don't own it or want to hear it. I could always burn my own version but without the tracklisting there is no point.

Boris, presumably it would have had more like 10 or 12 tracks per disc.

And another thing was The Dawn a concept Prince had before he'd hoped to release Come / Gold on the same day [or closely together]? I'm sure this was answered in the amazing COME thread started by Scififilmnerd but I've forgotten!!

Uhm... confuse

Not much is known about the 1993 The Dawn other than Prince worked on one and that the NPG Operator segues were introduced at this point. But was it ever finished? biggrin

Wondering about what Prince's 1993 The Dawn would have been like is what inspired Borishfishdear's tracklist for the The Dawn remix compilation. biggrin

I think. confused

But was it ever finished? biggrin

Wondering about what Prince's 1993 The Dawn would have been like is what inspired Borishfishdear's tracklist for the The Dawn remix compilation. biggrin

I think. confused

(Did that answer your question? confuse )

No!!!!!

So if the The Dawn is a project from 1993 then it does predate the 'same-day' release of Come/Gold 'idea'.

I thought someone else had complied that fan-made version not Boris. His synopsis of each individual track was excellent however.

Yes. The Dawn was a latter half of 1993 thingie, whereas the simultaneous release of Come and Gold was a spring 1994 idea. biggrin

I have to hold my hands up and admit that the fan-made "The Dawn" 3CD set
is my little creation.

And SciFi is quite correct... it was indeed inspired by wondering what the
real "The Dawn" would've been like had it been released.

Actually, these versions of the Dawn, created by fans, are a bit too long. I can't imagine that The Dawn would have been any longer than a double disc. I'm not really feelin' the track selection.

I rather think that The Dawn takes some of the Exodus outtakes and certain 94-96 era Artist tracks that show up on Crystal Ball.

A good set list would be (not in this order):

Empty Room
Mad
Funky Design
Days Of Wild
Acknowledge Me
Ripopgodazippa
Hide the Bone
2morrow
Da Bang
Calhoun Square
What's My Name?
Strays Of the World
Poom Poom
She Gave Her Angels
The Ride
Goodbye
