Friend,Lover,Sister.Mother/Wife

snowflake

that's one of the few songs I've never seen being
discussed on this forum.

so what do y'all think about this slowjam?

it always reminds me slightly of the jackson's
"can you feel it", but don't ask me why because
the songs aren't similar at all

smile

I kinda like it, but it gets a bit much when
Prince starts crooning "ti amo ti amo", that
is usually when my scrotum retreats into my
belly and I turn on another song
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I really like the song. It's one of the best from emancipation.

I LOVE this song! The breakup between Mayte and Prince makes me feel sad because it seemed like they loved eachother so much. In reality a marriage is hard work and I guess it just makes me sad of the realisation that sometimes love is not enough. I belive if you really love someone you should make sacrfices and compromises to keep your relationship alive. But I guess they had different priorites in life and I'm sure being in the public spotlight added a whole new dimention of stress. But still if I were Prince I would have done anything to make it work with Mayte. Women like that don't come along every day. What a wonderful woman inside and out! biggrin

Oh but I do love this song. I can't help but think of Prince and Mayte when I listen to it though....he seemed VERY in love with her at the time. I remember when Emancipation came out and when they got married and I was SO happy for Prince being a Prince fan because we all knew how he went through women like most people go through socks! I thought "Wow! She must really be special! He finnaly met his counterpart! True love does exist and I hope he gives his all to her!

It was pretty sad to hear they broke up. I guess sometimes love isn't enough. hrmph

I don't know. It's a very weird song imo. One of the
very very verrrrry few prince songs I don't know
wether to like or to dislike. I some way, I'm unable
to qualify this track.

If someone wrote lyrics like that for me, I'm not sure I would take them as a compliment. confused

I mean, prince is basically saying that he fucked around while knowing Mayte because he wasn't sure who his soulmate was, so he had to fuck everyone and their mother in order to find out. Kinda like a dirty way of trying on the shoe from Cinderella, and apparently Mayte was the one that fit (his dick). "Soulmate", indeed. wink

So, no, I don't consider it a particularly romantic song, more like an "i'm sorry I was cruel to you and here's a reminder at our wedding". And so I don't particularly like the song, no. biggrin

Hmmmm...interesting inturpritation...but I do belive Prince has a negative view of women in the first place. In a way I'm sure it is completly not all his fault...I'm sure he has run into his share of golddiggers and starfuckers. Maybe his using all these women sexually is his way of establishing his power. Mayte obviously was very in love with and unlike many of the women he met in his life. wink

That's probably what he actually did, but if I recall correctly he was saying that he went through all of these women before he knew Mayte was the one. In this instance he was fucking around on her.

Anyway, I always thought this and all of the love songs on Emancipation were a little syrupy. I was kind of let down that they didn't have the fire of Adore and his earlier songs. They weren't very creative and that's what bothered/bothers me.

It gets totally buried with the rest of the ballads on the whole three disc extravaganza. There is something interesting about its production and all that little gimmickry he's utilized on it, but in the whole context of the album it sounds quite conventional and forgettable. I doubt Prince himself has even thought of that song in weeks.

I too agree with the above Statement..
I think Prince and Mayte were really in love at one time.. just look
at the "Betcha By Golly wow" video when he comes in the doctors room
they hug!
Another song that has some nice words is "Lets have a baby".. I think
that is the title.. Its on the same disc. as "Friend/lover.."
The words really hit home to me cause my hubby & I want a baby, and
that is all we think about too...
I think Mayte was a great women too..
I wish they would of stayed together!!!!!

And that's love? So basically you're saying if they had just shaken hands on the video it wouldn't have been a credible gesture of real love?
