It probably has to be someone who don't know the value of good Funk. This song is a Funk masterpiece hands down. Enuff Said. [Edited 9/10/05 13:14pm]

That's my sentiments exactly. I posted something to this effect already. They can't relate cuz they weren't there, but this song in 84 was something else! SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

That's my sentiments exactly. I posted something to this effect already. They can't relate cuz they weren't there, but this song in 84 was something else! I was three in 1984, so i definitely don't remember when the song came out and I most likely can't appreciate how different the song was when it first hit the radio. However, I feel that in the context of the music that came out after "when doves cry", the song still stands apart. It's true that there have been many other 'bare bones' songs that imitate the sparse sound that 'when doves cry' made popular. I think that's what the neptune's 'sound' was all about. But 'when doves cry' is the original. it's the prototype and it's colder, cleaner, and deeper than anything else that came out after it. After becoming a Prince fan, I really came to see how derivative popular music is. That being said, I would give my eye teeth to have heard that song when it first came on the radio back in 1984. My eye teeth.
