On the Howard Stern show this morning, Mike Walker featured Prince as one of stories for the gossip game. The object is to guess the false story.
According to Walker, Prince had a hotel clear their v.i.p. room for him, and he showed up with two ladies and ordered only a bottled water with three straws.
He also left a poor tip.

The story turned out to be true, according to Walker.

This is the second time I heard Prince left a poor tip.

European waiters and waitresses are paid decent salaries and do not have to depend on tips. Those are just a little extra. (I believe Neversin is a European, right?)

If the waiters/waitresses are not getting a proper wage, it's the tight boss's fault not the customers. Doesn't make it right to expect a tip even when serving poorly. And if this place was cleared, clearly the waiter was the tittle-tattle since he was the only one there!

It's different in the U.S. Tips make up a significant portion of a waiter's salary. I would say the waiter deserved a big tip if he was the one that had to clear out the entire room.

I've heard that he was a great tipper, from numerous waitstaff who have waited on him.

The UK provides salaries to waiters as do many other European countries and tips are considered incidental or "extra". In the USA the custom is different and the majority of a waiter's income is derived from gratuities presented by the customers. There are some USA states that the employer is allowed to pay as low as $2.13 an hour. In the USA tips are a reward for good service and there are variables to consider in calculating a tip. Primarily, USA diners prefer having the option on the gratuity and rebel at "mandatory" gratuities. Currently the standard is 15-20% with the customer's option of higher or lower.

I think where the the whole "leaving a poor tip" issue comes up is the fact that Prince [allegedly] made a big production of calling up the Tropicana in Hollywood (where this incident supposedly occured) and telling them he was going to come by **IF** he - and his entourage - could have the (already occupied) VIP room to themselves....soooo the Tropicana booted out the people who were already there, Prince finally showed up later and ordered nothing but one bottle of water with three straws, leaving either no tip or such a small, token tip that it was taken as more of an 'insult', than a legitimate gratuity for the waitstaff.

I guess the Tropicana waitstaff, or the hotel itself or whatever, felt slightly miffed that they went through the hassle of booting out a bunch of people from the VIP room, only to have Prince come in and play MR. ROCK STAR and not even show any appreciation for the hotel having met his demands, and then leave a tip (or no tip, I don't know what the actual truth is) that was possibly intended to communicate attitude moreso than anything else.

I think it's funny myself. I think it's nauseating - the whole "VIP room" thing, and the way hotels and shit fall all over themselves to asskiss bigshot celebrities who like to pull rank and get special treatment. Maybe next time the Tropicana will think it over first when some 'VIP' calls up and makes a bunch of demands merely because they're so-and-so.

If the law was changed to aid low-paid workers, in that they get a decent minimum wage, surely that would make everyone happy and we then wouldn't have to leave tips for bad service? So blame the law, not the bad tippers.

So just cuz he's loaded that means he's gotta throw his money away? Because he's rich he's gotta pay a couple hundred bucks for a bottle of water?
I'm sure the hotel made plenty of cash when he booked the V.I.P. room.
