Prince & MJ: Let's end it

I know that it is quite bold to attempt to ask for a stop to the "Prince vs. MJ" debates. However,as someone who is a huge fan of both, I am gonna put this to you anyways.

1. As someone said before, this argument belongs in 1985. Honestly, if PRince and MJ were ever adversaries/competiton/etc, they veered off in different directions a long long time ago. No need to state how they chose different paths, they just ended up in different places and climbing different mountains. They've both has tremendous successes and big failures, but again, they walked different paths completely.

2. The fact is that neither Prince or MJ fans can absolutely and undeniably claim that either artist is a better in these 3 areas: showmanship, song quality, impact/influence/legacy. These are the only 3 areas that are really open for debate when it comes to Prince and MJ. After that it just comes down to taste and then you are splitting hairs.

Face it-MJ is a pop artist who happens to be artistic now and again. Prince is a musician/artist who happens to be commercial/pop now and again.

MJ towers over Prince in record sales/popularity/videos and Prince towers over MJ in musicianship/artistic daring/prolificness. So what are we arguing about?

You are right...It's hard to say who is better since the question is based on personal taste...But song quality which is another way of saying song writing clearly goes to Prince...That's not even a debate...And impact goes to MJ (commercial impact that is)...

Well said... I still think MJ needs some therapy or counseling though, speaking totally from a mental health standpoint.

So are you saying that Mariah Carey is a better songwriter than Bob Dylan? That's debatable right...Or how about Nelly Vs. Rakim? Is that debatable when it comes to songwriting???

yes

The thing is everyone has their personal preference of who they like...I could like Nelly more than I like Rakim, which is cool because that's my personal opinion...But when you are dealing specifically with artists, there are ceratin things that cannot be debated...Miles Davis is more skilled and innovative musician than say Kenny G...MJ dances circles around Prince; Rakim is lyrically better than say 50 Cent...Mariah Carey has a stronger voice than say Janet Jackson (who I like better than Mariah by the way...) and Prince is a more complete songwriter than MJ...Get it???...I guess you were doing this just to get a response (LOL)...That was a funny one..I have to give you props for that....But you are still my girl Katty.....

I never understood why people wanted to compare those two in the first place. The only thing they have in common is that they are both black and feminine. Even in their feminine sides they are different. Prince is a bold bad ass "bitch" with attitude and Michael is a weak sensitive "sissy". There's no comparison in that category either. Musically, there's absolutely no comparison.

Well, the "HIStory" album, to provide an example MJ fams love to use, is pure, egotistical, halfway market-pandering fluff to my ears, not some "beautiful, artistic masterpiece" like they hilariously describe it as. Want real, artistic masterpieces from real, artistic greats? Try Miles, Stevie, Marvin, Joni, Sly, Prince, etc.

Actually, there are even far superior 'artistic' pop albums out there, too.

Both Michael Jackson and Prince had the dubious distinction of becoming mega-stars at a time that had very few such allowances for black men in the music world.

It's America's pathology to compare "similar" celebrities -- even when closer scrutiny exposes the larger dissimilarites. It goes on all the time: Salma vs. J-Lo, Christina vs. Britney, Elton vs. Billy, etc.

As long as there are Prince fansites, these Prince/MJ debates are gonna be a presence. I sorta expected this when I signed on to prince.org.
When you read thru 'em you can see that alot fans enjoy expressing their opinions on this subject , dated as it may be.
So I figger why fight 'em.
Who is truthfully the best?
Everyone knows.
Physicist say that there are probably no real absolutes, but this is one of those few things that each of us can say we know absolutely.
I know the answer.
For me, I know that when no one is looking, that when the house is empty, when I,m working in my studio at 2:30 in the morning, when my guard is completely down & I'm in a state where I don't feel like I have to explain, defend or validate myself to anybody any where and suddenly...
a songs comes out of my stereo makes me stop whatever I'm doing and just absorb every note, every beat, every nuance in the bounce of the rhythym or of the lyric & make me say out loud "Damn that"s fonky!" or "Damn that's smooth" or "Damn that's beautiful...
and my words are not for the ears of another but just as reminder to myself that I'm actually here & get to enjoy such an experience.
I know that while there are many artists that have "gifted" me with much music that has this effect on me, the name that comes up the most when I look at my library 'o' music is Prince.
I know that if all the smartest people in the world got together and came up with all the reasons why he isn't the best artist out there( not as great a dancer as..., didn't sell as many albums,.. is passe', etc.) that there is nothing that they could tell me (or you or anybody else) that could stop the feeling that comes when listening to my(or yours or anyone else) favorite music.
The feeling is there, it exists and it exists so that I can feel it.
I'm supposed to feel it.
We all are.
The best artist can't be determined on a general level, but on an individual one.
The styles of music may be different, but the level of enjoyment is supposed to be the same. The level that moves your heart, your mind or your booty... the highest level.
...and whatever the name of the artist who has this effect on you, that is
who is the best.

But we all know this

so I humbly ask that you excuse my pointless rantings ( that's more than I expected to express when i started this post)
and on with the endless debate...

HIStory is a great album! And altho it's not a masterpiece as a whole, some of the songs are like Earth song, Stranger in moscow etc. And it's not even a POP album, cause it has different styles such as..Rock (D.S) Classical (Little Susie). Most certainly NOT just bubblegum pop!

See, this is the thing about us MJ fans. HIStory is a pop album. Little Susie dabbles in classical, but it is not a "Classical" song. It's a pop song based on an orchestral theme. DS ? Sure it's got some rockin' guitars, but it is not a pure rock song. It's pop. MJ always has one foot planted in pop and has never just done a genre straight up abandoning his pop sensibilities.
