Musicology(CD) Appreciation

At first I was very skeptical about this new, clean music of his. The title track sounded great the first few times, but then got old. Then I bought the CD and after a few weeks it grew on me and I enjoyed it. I realized that Prince is always growing musically and that all his music should be appreciated. Million Days, Call My Name, Cinnamon Girl, and Reflection are my favs, but there are many other awesome tracks as well(we'll just forget about Life O' the Party). And I like the title track again now that I understand the whole album better. So basically, I'd just like to say that I think this is a really tight album and anyone else who feels the same way, please post.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

The only thing I really don't get is the absolutely pointless break in the titel song. What is that? And his blabla at the end is strange, too.

I believe Musicology is his tightest effort since probably The Gold Experience. I mean, mostly everything on the album is high-quality. My 2 favorite joints on this record would have to be "What Do U Want Me 2 Do", where he brings back his 1980's ballad formula with him doing his legendary linn drum rhythms and Call My Name. Vocally, Prince is at his finest and the NPG are really at their most soulful and richest. There were about 3 duds on this album, but the rest was excellent. I'm disappointed with the packaging of the CD, which is a digipak that has a flap that can't stay closed and the booklet just falls out because there is no place for the booklet to be placed in the digipak. The artwork is kinda cheesy and computer generated, but it's cool though. Musicology is a strong return-to-form nevertheless, although I did like Rainbow Children better for it's neo-soul flava.

I think the disdain for this album comes from it's simplicity. It almost like watching Prince do morning calisthenics. A few jumping jack, a little jogging in place, some arm circles. It's Prince at his most effortless. The kind of stuff he can do in his sleep.

It is a good, solid effort, yes. But we know Prince can do so much better.

*edited to add that I like the album as a whole, but it's really like drinking a soda on a hot day. It's just not enough. It leaves you wanting more.

I still dig Musicology. Very good CD.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Musicology kicks ass. What amazed me is that, unlike the inconsistancy of Rave, Musicology was very consistant from start to finish. It was like you can almost feel that Prince was being Prince instead of trying to record that next big hit (let's face it, that was Rave's big problem, tho some songs off that CD are tight).

Overall, it's a great album.

You know, if United States Of Division had been inserted between Dear Mr Man and Reflection, this album would have flowed so much better.

As it stands, it starts funky, but ends with three ballads.

If you're in the mood for funk, you only want to hear the first half of the CD. If you're in the mood for some meaningful mid-tempo/slowies, then you only want to hear the second half of the CD.

Putting USOD in there would have created a bit more balance and it would have worked considering that USOD has a similar lyrical message as Dear Mr Man.

Oh, and I do think that the CD needed a long, meandering funk workout towards the end.

Musicology. Prince's masterpiece-of-shit.

If he pulled Life O The Party and put Satisfied or Magnificient in its place, it would be a great album. As it is I will stick with it being a very good album.

Pathetic run-of-the mill, prince-by-numbers cd...people who think it's great must not have heard many of his other albums ! I lost this cd and couldnt bother to replace it

Yeah, Musicology is really just a quickly thrown together, unambitious imitation of Prince's earlier work. It has a really dull, safe vibe to it.

It's a fairly bland commercial effort where you can tell Prince was making sure not to alienate the casual listener.

That's fine though. I get what he was going for here. He didn't even play many of the songs on the tour.

He himself said that it's "just a pop record" and "meant to accompany the concert experience."

His true focus in 2004 was the tour, and that's fine.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
