Emancipation

CD 1 was my favorite of the 3 and then CD 2. My favorite jams R 'White Mansion', 'Damn If I Do', Eye Can't Make U Love Me, Cortin' Time, 'Mr. Happy', 'Somebody Somebody', 'Joint2Joint', 'Curious Child', 'Soul Sanctuary', 'My Computer', 'New World', 'The Love We Make', 'Betcha By Golly Wow', 'Let's Have A Baby' 'Friend, Lover, Sister & Mother'and '1 Kiss At A Time'. This CD is so very underated, it's full gems!!! The most commercial of Prince's CDs.

number two was always mine, and just recently i've come to appreciate some good things on number one.

yes, i'm starting to think like you, that Emancipation is actually an underrated work.

then again, in general, i find that prince's music in general improves on several listenings.

Not even off ebay?

There always seem to be copies there, on the cheap.

There are better deals on Amazon . . . you can probably get it for under 10 bucks.

I think emancipation does not get enough credit. I love cd3 especially human body and sleep around. Somebodys somebody is great when ur feeling lonely and as always prince always understands. I am surprised at the amount of prince fans that dont have it. You HAVE to get it !

I agree w/you. CD 1 is my fave then 2. I seriously can't even deal w/3 but I haven't really given it much of a chance yet. Maybe someday, I'll dig it. Emancipation, REALLY DOES have some awesome tunes on it, I just think the album as a whole is a bit much to chew. Break it down to 2 discs and you have another SOTT, IMO.

I agree, if Emancipation was broken down to the best 15 songs then it would have been a masterpiece ..... just a few too many not so good ones on there , Disc 1 & 2 are easily better than 3 although 3does have a couple of tunes smile

Curious - I've always found disc 3 to be the most interesting.

Disc 1 is vintage Prince - its supposed to be representative of him.
Disc 2 is basically an ode to Mayte, I like it, but its a bit syrupy in places.

Both of these discs, however, still contain some of my fave Prince jams - Joint2Joint gets special mention.

But, Disc 3 is just far more "progressive" for me and, therefore, the most interesting. Hard-edged cry of despair and defiance to start then lean, tight, driving funk both with intelligent lyrics. Then, The Human Body actually made me want a Prince dance/techno album (though sans vocals perhaps!). Face Down - Prince's greatest rap. Style's just great musically and lyrically and My Computer is a career highlight - that coda, just awesome!

People often knock Emancipation, usually for its production or its length - but I think its a towering opus. Production-wise, every album sounds different, there's bound to be a production style that doesn't suit some people - but the sound quality of this production is first rate - at that time, it was the clearest and most detailed we'd ever heard Prince.

And, despite the clear differences in theme between discs, the fact he manages to keep the production and package together over 36 tracks is an amazing testament to the man's ability. Other artists are/have been capable of this (Zappa springs to mind), but I can't think of any other example where its basically a one-man band! (Zappa had many genius musicians on his albums).

Its not the best album cause there are to many cheesy soppy rubbishy ones dedicated to Mayte. Worth having though in your collection.
