Due to Prince's large catalog of songs I haven't heard much of his earlier stuff, but recently I've been listening to some of his earlier shit like Dirty Mind. It's just brilliant. When You Were Mine is one of his greatest songs. One question though, why's all his singing done in falsetto?

It is a stunning album. One of the most explicit and rawest albums of the 80's. I wrote a review for it a month ago, read it here and please rate it if you can: http://www.amazon.com/gp/...96-7050525

It's the first album where P started to find his way, image wise. This was the blueprint for the superstardom he would later achieve with Purple Rain. From this album onwards, his attitude, imagery, using the letter "u" as opposed to "you", etc. His famed studded trenchcoat started here. This album is paramount in terms of how the world would latter relate to Prince. Overall, I think this album is a better album than "Controversy" album. It's more focased.

Although the song "Controversy" is one of my all-time favorite songs of Prince's.

I absolutely love this album, it along with a few others is always in my #1 prince album rotation. I remember getting the record and having to sneak it home. That and it fit on one side of a 60 minute blank tape. I don't mind short albums when they are this good. You just end up playing it a couple times in a row : )

It's definately a good album. I remember going to get the album when it first came out. Seeing the album cover was VERY odd. I'm eleven years old and shit, and I'm thinking "What the fuck?" Even the backside of the album isn't much better. By then, I was already kneedeep into cats like KISS, Parliament/Funkadelic, Bowie, Iggy, Rick James, etc. The more flashy the better. BUT, Prince at this stage, was definately looking, um,..strange. I remember feeling kinda uncomfortable taking the album up to the counter to pay for it. I remember the dude behind the register looking at the cover with this disgusted look on his face. And then he looked at me, this little 11 year old black kid with this huge afro like I was crazy. Oh well, the album is still killin'!

A 21-year old in a tight speedo with a coat with no shirt and a pensive attitude on his face? Isn't that really embarassing? My answer is YES!

The world was not ready for this album in 1980. If I am not mistaken, it was one of the first if not the first album to come with some sort of warning sticker pertaining to the lyrics. This album is raw, funky and daring. The last four songs are as good as any album out there.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Prince was at the most riskest point of his career before the LOVESEXY-era, where he posed naked and turned off most of the public. The man was and probably still not scared of taking chances. That was a great point, Handclapsfingasnapz! lol

I listened to the song "Dirty Mind" this week and it is definately an excellent song. The arrangement of the vocals, the instruments, especially when the beat slowed down a bit at the end. Great song.

It is not so much embarassing I think. What it really is, is the strange look u usually get and the explaination some people want, like someone said earlier. It happened to me last month! Of course as Prince fans we have grown a thick skin to this shit, especially the 'Prince is gay' stuff. All I really say to them is, " Ring it up or shut up!" then, I go about my merry way.

but...
How embarassed would u have been if the affectionately dubbed ' Wet rat pic' was the cover of Dirty Mind instead?

I wouldnt have been embarassed if it was the 'wet rat pic'. I would find it hard to control my laughter when looking at it, but not embarassed.
