i think i paid $45 for the record from wynnco. it was the black cover with the shiny black picture of prince (on erotic city records). i thought this was the coolest record ever and the sound quality was great! this was in 1990 i think.

that sounds like the one i got too. was very happy with it.

I purchased my first black album from a record store here in Melbourne for $50. Then i saw a gorgeous vinyl picture disc that was selling at $200. I knew it was steep but i just had to have it. I have since picked up the original WB cd.
The Black Album-Lovesexy saga fascinated me, as it probably did most of u.It may have isolated mainstream fans, but for me, the incredible depth these two albums had both musically and lyrically made it personally a very intriguing period.
By the way what the hell is the muttering at the start of LeGrind? Can someone deciphen this for me?
With the exception of Bob George, i dont see this album as a particular dark and depressive album, more like a funk filled journey. What do u guys think?

I've never thought of the Black Album as being dark because of its contents but because of where he was drawing from in its creations. The voices he was listening to. Whether he was drawing on the dark side or the light side of the force. Etc.

Lovesexy has a quote I've always liked:

"But my Lord is so quiet when he calls your name - when you hear it, your heart with thunder - you will want to hear it ever day!"

That line always resonated with me because it so perfectly described what it took for me to listen to my heart and live by my faith - trying to calm all to hear a whispered voice of truth, no matter the chaos surrounding me.

IMHO Prince was up to his games in 87 because he was MAD. I guess 93 wasn't the first time he thought of depriving Warner Brothers of his name, since that was one of the curiousities surrounding the planned release of this album. He was mad and working from that anger and listening to the chaos around him and when you listen to the chaos that's all you can hear.

And then he heard that voice again.

I feel so stupid...I bought the black album when I was in grade 10 and then I gave it away because at the time I thought it was crap. Now I wish I had it back. I remember that song Cindy C. It was kind of funky. I noticed the models he used for the video Cream kind of looked like Cindy C.
