The Riddle of the Extended Version

Which ones of these were actually "extended" after the fact in the studio?

Sexy Dancer
Let's Work
Little Red Corvette
Let's Go Crazy
I Would Die 4 U
Raspberry Beret
Pop Life -UK-
Paisley Park
America
Kiss
Mountains
Anotherloverholenyohead
U Got The Look
I Wish U Heaven
Partyman -video mix-
Scandalous
Thieves In The Temple
Gett Off
My Name Is Prince
Space
I Hate U (a bit shorter, but i always thought that this was a 'demo')
Come On

...and which ones were actually a re-edit from the master recordings?

I've wondered about this previously.

Let's Work was added to after the initial recording, as mentioned by one of the PPs at some point on NPGMC - the drums on the extended portion are played by Morris Day, if I remember correctly.

Little Red Corvette was also added to after the initial recording - I remember seeing this listed in The Vault - perhaps even after the 1999 album was released (I forget).

I think the same is true of I Wish U Heaven and Scandalous - not sure about some of the others, though.

I think the "extended version" was actually most of the initial master recording. It just has too many nooks 'n' cranneys to be an "add-on"

The 12" of America is the original recording, it was edited 4 the album. The song would've been even longer but the tape ran out. I thought that was 1 of the coolest things I read in DMSR biggrin

That's the stuff I truly miss.

Not an entire album, but, the focus he put into one individual song.

AND THEN SHARED IT WITH US!!!

I still remain speechless to the fact that "Computer Blue" wasn't released in it's entirety.

That's funny, I was JUST thinking this the other day. I've been really into the extended versions lately.

I think the following are the original extended master takes:
Paisley Park (the British version, not the American 'Fresh Dance Mix')
Let's Go Crazy
Another Lonely Christmas
Erotic City
Girl
Hello
America
Love Or Money
Alexa de Paris
U Got The Look
Anotherloverholenyohead
Sexy Dancer
Shockadelica
La, La, La, He, He, Hee
Scarlet Pussy
Escape

The intro to Raspberry Beret may be the original version, but the outro is obviously tacked on.

The master versions have extra verses in the middle, or sound like continuations of the album edits. The ones that were redone especially for maxi-single release seem to have obvious changes edited onto the end.

Kiss
Little Red Corvette
Housequake
Let's Work
Thieves In The Temple
She's Always In My Hair

Mountains could go either way, but I think that's an extended master. Scandalous and the Lovesexy A-sides are extended remixes of the album versions. I Would Die 4 U is an alternate take from a rehearsal, I believe.

Of course the above opinions aren't based on any fact; but I edit a lot of audio and you can hear where the edits are on the original album cuts (if an extended outro has been tacked on). You can just hear the difference between something added as an afterthought and something that was originally recorded with the intention of being part of the song.

And yes, I miss the extended versions terribly. sad

Me 2! The same goes 4 Mountains, Anotherloverholeinyohead... not 2 say that the Revolution was his best band even though in my book THEY R, I miss those times because of what they did musically.
