Prince - One of the world's greatest guitarists? I think he is. I think if it was possible to have a contest some kind of way and it was He, Carlos Santanna, and Eric Clapton I think he could hold his own note for note if not beat them. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

I'm suprised noone has ever tried anything like that. They could call it like a Guitar Gods contest. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

i remember some stoner metalhead guy when i in high school telling me that he could play any prince guitar solo with one hand because they're so easy to play.
of course, he never demonstrated this for me, which led me to believe that the guy might have had a particular one-handed talent, but it wasn't playing prince songs on his guitar...

"Let's Go Crazy"
"Purple Rain" "The Cross" I'd love to see a stoner metalhead attempt these one handed - especially the live versions....

When you have Miles Davis, Eric Clapton and Steve Vai all saying you're one of the world's greats, you can't really argue with that.
I think they'd know. | |

They don't seem to think so. Steve Vai is quoted as saying P is better than him?

No. But I think he puts him on the same level.

Well, Prince is certainly underrated, but as long as you have guitar gods from the 70’s like Blackmore, Page and May around….P is way down the list. And whens the last guitar driven album he’s really made? unless you wanna count n.e.w.s....
Something like Cinnamon Hurl is disgrace by even Lenny Kravitz standards and is just AOR drivel. I doubt we'll ever see another ATWIAD again. Steve wants to be diverse like P though. Passion & Warfare, his best known album shows P’s influence. But Vai, and the other former Alcatrazz member Ywngie are better guitarist than P imo. [Edited 8/25/05 0:45am]

I think Prince is too concerned with handling everything during a recording. The guitar is always top notch, but it's just part of the mix, rarely at the forefront. But in a live setting, he really shines and you can tell it's what really gets him off. And it does for me too. I'm constantly blown away by his playing. There may be others out there that are more technical than Prince, but there's no one to my ears that SOUNDS better. That's all I care about.

It's a personal experience. P is quite moving. He's excellent, but alot of greats are out still out there that came before Prince and have done records that took music to another level. One of the world's greatest? Possibly? But top ten? Twenty? C'mon, you would be overlooking lots a people that are still alive.

Prince is a funky guitarist, but he's not the greatest. He has skill, but he's more of a showman.
I think he's in his best guitar form in free-form jams, but there are many moments when it seems as if the guitar is just there 2 decorate him Example >>> Rave Un2, during the Family Stone jam, it just hangs around him, and he wasn't singing that much ya'll. Also, 2 examples of Prince fu**ing up (as in mistakes) are in the Alladin video. 1+1+1+3 shows him getting caught in a glitch. In RaveUn2, during Purple House, he tears the shit up, but there's also a moment where it seems as if he doesn't know which note 2 hit, shakin his head back and forth, playin' it off. Also in RaveUn2, the guitar intro 2 PRain isn't that great. I even think he plays a false note. Then, b 4 he steps 2 the mike, the guitar just drops, as if he didn't know what 2 do next. Jimi Hendrix would've kicked Prince's ass NE day on guitar, so will Carlos Santana. Lastly, Prince hides behind the Xtra fuzz or distortion on guitar. He wouldn't even have 2 hit a note, there's so much effect on his sound that the guitar would make noise on its own. Peace and Hugs!

Rinluv said: lilgish said: well, They're both better than Prince. They R not better then Prince. ur gonna tell me that Prince took the guitar to the level clapton did. It took the GOAT Jimi Hendrix to knock Clapton off. I rather listen to Prince over Clapton any day, but you can hold any Cream or D&TD up to any prince track. better than Steve Vai, I don't hear it, I'm not a muscian, so take that for what's it worth, but if P is better than Steve Vai than he's in the top ten.

Prince is one of the most underrated guitarist of his generation, yes. But really, there are SO many guitarists who are better than prince, young and old. Since all the fanatics have the tracks they're gonna shove in the face of the hatas, here's a list of albums that will help show just exactly how much competition prince has for "greatest ever"
Jimi Hendrix-any live album, Electric Ladyland (the first two studio albums are good, but most of his most impressive studio performances are on this) Derek and the Dominoes (Clapton, Duane Allman)-Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs John McLaughlin-The first three Mahavishnu Orchestra albums Frank Zappa-Hot Rats Jeff Beck-Blow By Blow, Wired Santana-Moonflower Praxis (Buckethead)-Transmutation Anything by Pat Metheny, Django Reinhardt, George Benson or any number of jazz guitarists Anything by the old blues masters, (anyone with the last name king, buddy guy, etc..) The first Mars Volta Album In The Court of the Crimson king Rolling Stones (Mick Taylor)-Sticky Fingers The first three Funkadelic albums (Eddie Hazel) or some of the latter ones (Mike Hampton) Guitarists who are less flashy but are great in their expressivity, style or creativity Chuck berry Eddie Cochran Keith Richards Curtis Mayfield George Harrison
