This technique, of putting a melody line together with another key, be it related or not, is kinda interesting and can really produce some interesting results. I love how some jazz artists reharmonize a well-known piece and make it sound completely new. *****Yeah, think about "Summertime"...there r lot of versions.....I bet ya know this song....which version do u prefer?

Oh, I heard so many versions of "Summertime..." I like Fantasia Barrino's version. Really nice string arrangement. I've also played this in a jazz combo as latin-style, rather than the usual swing.

For example, you wouldn't say "Oye Como Va," which is in A Dorian, is in the key of G major, would you? And to add to the confusion, the vocal line is kinda sung in B-flat major. Really, we could start an entire thread on Prince songs in which his singing implies a different key than the one in which the song is written or played. A few examples: - "Sign 'O' The Times" has a bass line that is mostly C minor, but Prince sings the verses in C Mixolydian. - "17 Days" is in G minor, but the vocal lines imply B-flat major and even F major over that. - "Hello" (and many other Prince songs, for that matter) seems to simultaneously function as a song in B-flat major and B-flat minor. - "7" (and yet many more songs) has a bass line that vamps over the phrase: "A...E G E G E A...E G E G E," and yet Prince's vocals will sing an E7 chord over the same line. Usually, the G-natural in the bass and G-sharp in the voice would clash, but it works. Leave it to a genius like Prince to come up with those crazy sonic combinations that work like a dream. "Welllll... Look at the big brain on Brad!" [Edited 8/27/05 17:35pm] tho his informative post didn't bother me...this was still as funny as hell.....SO appropriate! this stuff does fascinate me. Like is some of it doen on purpose...or does it happen without him knowing it's going on, just knows he enjoys the sound. U know...like a chemist who's fuckin around...and accidentally makes rubber....or is fuckin around and makes gold on accident....like they didn't know it was gonna happen but it did. Does Prince plan these things or do they just happen on accident.

Ummmmm ... just so you know ... rubber comes from trees, and gold is mined. No 'fuckin around' or 'accidents' involved. L I'm just, I'm just Levi from the org

wow. this is a great thread. i am a piano beginner, so after reading this, I have many questions...I will be back shortly with some of them

Ok, so here is my first question. Please forgive my limited knowledge, as I am just learning.
So, in learning music theory, I thought that you determined the key by looking at the last note and at the notatations at the beginning of the staff....is this not correct? How else do you determine what key is being played? I have just recently learned how to form chords from the keys. The only keys I know so far are the majors and minors, I have not yet got into augmented, diminished, etc. Second question, P's sheet music I assume was transcribed by WB, so that would mean that it is not always accurate, correct?

I can answer your second question. You're right - it's not always accurate. Try playing the chords 2 some of his songs as they appear on the sheet music and then listen 2 the actual songs. You'll be making a face like this... Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

Thanks, yea, cause I was playing one the other day (dont remember which one off hand) and when I came to a section of it and played it, I kept thinking to myself, "now this doesn't sound right", reread it, played it again, same thing. This is my all time favourite thread. I am learning so much. This is the first thread I will actually print out. Good job guys. Especialy Paisley2002 for starting it.
OK a quick question. I was classically trained so my fingers are better than my ear. I am currently working on improving that. What ear training program(s) do you guys recommend? To All the Haters on the Internet
