Used Prince songs in AI Auditions

Today I auditioned for American Idol in Chattanooga (my hometown). The event was put on by fox and 1 winner out of 150 is gauranteed an audition for Idol producers in Sept. Anyway I sang Raspberry Beret first round. From the 150 in the first round 20 were picked as finalists. I was a finalist. So I was going to sing Tom Waits "Ol' 55' (showcases some range) or "KISS". I figured I'd sing KISS so I would stand out and I can nail the falsetto. So I got up there and cut loose. I thought I did a good job, but I didn't place in the top three (they had 1st, 2nd, 3rd just for show). I think I would have faired better with the other song. I should have known better than to sing something like KISS down here in hickville. Oh well, I gave it a shot. I think there's something to be said for that. pout pout

I was originally planning to audition in Memphis on Sept 5, but thousands of people show up to those and there is no garauntee the producers will even audition you. When I found out about the thing in Chatt I thought to myself "well you can do this and get it out of your system, if you don't win you can save yourself all the trouble of Memphis" All this contest did was garaunteed 1 person an audition for Idol producers. If you make it through one audition with them you can actually be put through several more and end up spending a few days there. Really a big hassle and I don't know if I'm up for it. People will start lining up at 6:00am the DAY BEFORE auditions. Chances are really slim there, and if you've noticed it's not all about talent. They have to have some good ones, some bad ones, one or two are always fat, some white, some black, they can't be dicriminatory you know. They are really not seeking talent they are seeking ratings and they know how to get em. Oh well, I'm going to try again next year at the local contest. Only ten minutes away! can't beat that! biggrin

I'm not just saying this because I "think" I sing good, but I can really nail it. However, you may have noticed that Prince gets higher with each chorus so I start having trouble by the third chorus. If you sing it acapella though like I did you can keep each chorus the same and it works just fine. No need for it though cause I only had a minute and that only gets you through the first chorus. I can and did however get attitude like Prince does on the last "ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with". I thought I had impressed 'em, but probably just embaressed myself. No matter how well I did I'm just not sure anyone knew where I was coming from. They probably thought, oh this guys gone way to far here. Oh well, I never have been one to stick to the norm and I like that about myself.

I was surprised too. Didn't think I had a chance. Everybody else was singing country or oldies. Guess you never know.
