I'd most definitely put him up there with the best. Very few people believe me when I say so and just laugh at the idea. They've obviously never seen him live.

best is a hard word to use...he is one of the most versatile and gifted MUSICIANS in the bussiness PERIOD !! best means nothing...maybe in a punk band he would be too accomplished...maybe in a jazz group he would be lacking in his jazz chops because thats not his forte...if this thread said BEST FUNK GUITARIST then yes maybe...MAYBE he is the most innovative of our generation...but freddie stone...the cat from RUFUS...and several others may have torn him up in the 70's...THERE IS NO BEST !!! just BADASS !!! and that he is !!!!!

Best is a word I don´t really like because it´s all so relative.
Sure, technically there might be dozens of Spanish Flamenco virtuosos who can play stuff that Prince probably can´t, then again, maybe not. And yes, Hendrix and Santana are among his heroes, so maybe he doesn´t even think about being better than his own heroes he admired in his youth, and of course there might be some Jazz masters like Django Reinhardt and George Benson who know their stuff or field better than Prince, and maybe some Rock legends like Brian May or Jimmy Page are technically better or were more creative, I really don´t know because I don´t play any instruments, but what I do know is that there is no other musician or guitarist, whether it be in Funk, Rock or whatever, who can touch my soul like the music of Prince. Steve Vai and Santana are great, no doubt about that, and Carlos Santana´s 70´s albums sometimes take me to another dimension, but nobody comes even close to Prince in my personal Universe. So therefore, for me, he´s the best guitarist I know, and even his heroes and peers pay their respect and acknowledge him as one of the best out there. And Prince plays other instruments as well.....who knows how much better he could be on guitar if he played nothing else but guitar ? Producing songs, having his own studio complex, being his own manager, playing almost every instrument he needs in his music, arranging and composing stuff, playing and mixing so many different genres of music...give the man a break, he´s simply incredible and probably one of the most unique musicians ever. So, that being said, I guess it all boils down to how you look at it. I don´t know about techniques and chords and notes and complicated structures, but I do know that the 14 minute rehearsal version of Something In the Water from 1984 and Just My Imagination from that infamous 1988 aftershow or Shhh live give me a certain high that other musicaians don´t. That´s all. [Edited 8/25/05 4:58am] " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Well he obviously is one of the best ever! And he has something over alot of other guitarists...He can do MANY styles, and do them all very good "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

What can be said is that his live playing is where he stands out above the rest. He is probably in my opinion one of the best overall guitarists of our time. I have witnessed him playing beautifully live, unfortunately, he rarely crosses that magic over to his studio recordings. Like someone said before, the mix puts the guitar work in the back. I think that P thinks that in his concerts the audience wants to hear some mad guitar playing, but he holds back on his releases fearing it too much for your 'at home' listening pleasures. We all know that P can pull off some crazy playing, but he will never lay his wizardly skills down to tape like we want him to. It's a shame, he has too much 'Prince' in him to just go out and be a guitar legend. That's OK with me though. I'm tired of telling non-Prince Fans how good he is at guitar playing.

check out prince video(audio recording is there also) of
prince playing "we gonna make it funky" he played clean guitar licks so funky in the same time rhythm and lead huitar. he was amazing. i would like to see clapton or santana or even yngwie play that stuff. yngwie is lead guitar master but he cant play rhythm. clapton is good on rhythm but his style is not so diverse, althought all props to "i shot the sherriff" from crossroads dvd. clapton tore that solo.

I really just wanted to start some discussion guys and it looks like I did.
I think they're some really interesting responses here. I won't say he's the greatest ever after reading some stuff but I will say I think he's up there along side them and could hang with them. I do also really like others like Eric, Jimi, and Slash (Slash can rock his a** off) and also I agree whether you think he's the greatest or not that mostly he's still underated. Thanks for your responses, pretty good thread so far. Me being an Aerosmith fan I must also say Joe Perry can play also!! [Edited 8/25/05 9:15am] "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

all symantics aside - no artist or band can run shivers down my spine and make me wiggle in my seat like Prince can.
Second is Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. Then of course the old greats like Sly and Janice and the Woodstock stuff - uh oh, I'm showing my age. Most of the new stuff just makes me want turn it off. Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

This topic has been brought up so many times on this site. What I have seen is that if a thread about this is placed in Music and More, then most of the posts will definately say that P is not only the greatest guitarist but the greatest ANYTHING. But, when this is over in Non Music, where many of the musicians hang, including myself, the opinion is very different. My stand has always been this: Prince is an excellent guitarist and he is an excellent showman on the guitar. I never get caught up in the "who's better than" shit cuz it's all a matter of opinion and taste. What u believe is what u believe, regardless in what anyone else say. What u and I say does not make it gospel. That said, I have always felt P is underrated as a guitarist. Doesn't mean that a lot of folks who don't give it up to P doesn't know that P can play, cuz they do know. He gets a lot of praise from other known guitarists, as well as he should. P has been in the game as a pro since 1978. I rank P in my top 20 all time great guitarists. Is he at the top of that list? Hell nah. Jimi is. But, P is in there. P can definately hold more than his own as a lead guitarist. He always has. But where P really fucks up a lot of the other great guitarists is with his rhythm playing. P can run circles around many of the greats with just that alone, and then to throw in his lead skills, well....enough said. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. The guitar "purists" don't wanna give Prince his due and I think it's a race issue. Underrated?!?! By whom? THEY know homey can throw down.
Sh*t, Eric Gales is up there too, but who knows about him? We all know Lenny Kravitz but I'm impressed with little he does except for the album he produced for Cree Summer.
