Surprisingly, I really enjoyed that Controversy tour Or at least the video I have of it. That was before my time. I wish I had actually seen it. What I had seen though (on video)was this great band of young musicians, racilly integrated and playing this great mix of Pop, Soul, Funk, Hard Rock and New Wave. What more could you ask for? I'm still playing those guitar licks that Prince played in the show. But I'm willing to listen to anyone's thoughts or experiences with the tour, including the infamous shows opening for the Stones. Of course, he's done bigger and better things with his music and tours, but for some strange reason, I keep coming back to this one. I don't know wh, but this one resonates to me more than any other.

This was the first tour I had seen P do. I actually had a chance to go see P open for Rick with my older cousin, but I got sick and my mom wouldn't let me go. So, I had to wait untill Feb 82 at the Santa Monica Civic to see him. The Time AND Zapp opened. This wasn't to long after P got booed off stage at the Colisuem. Living in So Cal, this was HUGE news. It was all over the radio. Already being a P fan and a Stones fan, it felt kinda weird. Granted, I was a kid. Anyway, when I get to the Civic to finally see P, the place was packed. Easily, 75% of the crowd were girls. Most of them were "rude girls". I had them at my school, so I was hip to it. The "rude boy" buttons, the dyed purple jeans, the hair streaked with purple, the purple bandanas, purple sneakers, the whole 9. Zapp actually turned it out with the huge hit "More Bounce To The Ounce". The place went buck wild when they played that. The Time was good as well, but they would get much better on the 1999 tour. When P came out, all the girls flipped. They screamed the WHOLE show. Nonstop. I was most impressed with Dez, though. I watched and studied him the whole concert. He was just so cool and he had the best stage pressence. He was the most professional and the most natural. P was killin' too. Wild as fuck. P was totally all over the stage, stripping off his clothes and shit. This was the Prince that I know. Here and on the 1999 tour, this was the 'real' P. He had toned down sooooo much on the Purple Rain tour. But on his Controversy tour, man, he had so much to prove. He was such a great showman, could sing his ass off, and tore it up on guitar. The kid was bad, period. He was so street, thugish almost. Sure, he would do that sweet, prissy shit when he sung "Do Me, Baby". But that was strictly for the women. Other than that, P looked like he grew up tough, having to fight a lot cuz of his size. U could really see that on him during this period. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Stories, please..... This is a great fucking photo, by the way: Hell yeah, it is! This is one of my all-time fave pics of Prince and his band. At this time, he still had "individuals" as oppose to "clones". I had this pic from the "Let's Work" 12'inch blowed up into a poster size. I have it hanging up in my studio. It looks killer! Everybody that comes through, dig it. It's a great conversation piece. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I have (or had) a bootleg of the Controversy show from San Francisco....the quality is terrible, but you can STILL here the SCREEEAMING! Just like you described, the girls screamed through the ENTIRE SHOW! And they screamed for EVERY SONG, not just the hits either! That was an AMAZING show to listen to, I wish I had been there.

The Controversy tour was my first Prince concert back in 1982 at the half empty Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. I was 16 or 17 yrs. old and had just started getting into this weird mutha'. I remember the ticket price was $13.50!!
I think I still have the black and white program somewhere. The Time were simply incredible and i remember thinking Prince wouldn't be able to top that. Well he did!! He was all over the stage jumping off speakers in those high heels then he would bust a split, spin out and strut to the other side of the stage like a crazed maniac. His energy level was incredible. His falsetto vocals back then were so crisp they would cut you!! I would say the audience was 80% female and they were going absolutely crazy. I remember the sister in front of me actually pulled off her panties and threw them toward the stage. I could go on and on about that show. If It's available on tape you should check it out. It's a far cry from the very tame "grown up" Prince today. Personally, I like the old Prince better. However, he's still the baddest mf on the planet. [Edited 8/24/05 17:06pm]

I remember a classmate telling me about it. She came to school with a Time shirt that said "Aint Nobody Bad Like Me. She told me "Prince gave head to his guitar" in a semi disgusted manner. And it was at a lil ol place called San Bernadino Orange show. He would never play a place that small again.

I have a copy of the Washington, D.C. show. The show starts with "The Second Coming" playing in complete darkness. Then it starts with band playing "Sexuality" with a stage full of smoke and red lights. For a moment, it looks like they are actually standing in the fires of Hell. It wasn't until the camera zoomed out that I noticed that it was smoke instead of fire.
Prince also performed the long version of "Do Me, Baby" and took his shirt off and broke it on down. There was great audience participation on "Head". Prince broke it on down and let them chant...."Head...till you're burning up....head...till you get enough....head....till your love is red....head....love you till you're dead". That audience was loud and feeling it. He also did the long version of "Let's Work". I love the part when Dez shoved Prince's little ass down and Prince got up and shoved him back. Pure attitude! . . A question for any & all of you who've seen the tour....
Was there any sort of preaching or religious feeling on this tour at all? Just curious, considering the thoughts displayed in Controversy and Sexuality that betray a spirituality of sorts. I've seen a video of the PR tour, and was surprised at all the preaching he did by that time...

I only recently saw the Homecoming show on dvd and - like NWF says - it just draws you in. FANTASTIC! The opening sequence (Prince silhouetted), 'Lady Cab Driver' , the complete stage ownership during '1999' - even Lisa's orgasms - absolutely brilliant. I was shocked to see he was that good, even at that age. I guess that's what divides the old & new fans (but what makes me love the Org): I think new fans can appreciate the 'old days' just as much as the old skoolers but I doubt we'll ever understand it in the same way. I just love reading how daring he was then - and to have a musician you can relate to like no other... they must've been crazy days to have been a Prince fan.
