ok, so what's the best/fav musical performance in Purple Rain? I'm torn between The Beautiful Ones and Computer Blue
The Beautiful Ones has Prince at his prettiest and his best outfit. He looks fucking spectacular! And th e performance is classic rock/rnb god school. The whisper to a scream emotion and he didn't just drop to his knees, he dropped to his back. And just lay there while they tried to grab him. He was seemingly oblivious. And when those dronal moog synth org notes play at the end you feel like being in the aftermath after you just came. No wonder all they had to do was that one song and split. He killed em. I mean..did you see Morris' face (of course I did)? Computer Blue. Quite frankly, The Revolution are tearin it up on this one! As Bill-Lay said, the kid was in rare form. All sweaty and wet. And the breakdown and the shoulder rolls by the band on this one. They were in such a groove it was funkier than George Clinton himself taking a dump. Seeing this on the big screen was AMAZING lemme tell ya! Purple Rain: it was seeing a man become a rock god before your eyes. The performance with mostly just Princes close-up face shot was in the vein of Midlers one take face shot of When a Man Loves A Woman from The Rose, and that Sinead would later do in her video of Nothing Compares To You. Some say Prince couldnt act, but he mugged that one up like DeNiro in "Raging fucking Bull", hello! I know that these were filmed/lip synched performances but still, I give them credit. They all appear to be inconic images to me. . [Edited 8/23/05 21:33pm]

Mine would be the opening song to the movie, "Let's Go Crazy". I love the part in the middle when the song breaks down into the extended part with the handclaps. The strobe lights are going and Prince looks almost robotic as he turns and dips with his guitar to the beat of the claps. Andy is a four letter word.

Two things stand out. The sillohuetted rubbing of the guitar bent down post-rock icon image and when he and Wendy both do the raise up then go down with your guitar in unison stroke move...badazz!

I agree! They ROCKED! Also, my favorite is Would Die 4 U! At the ending of the song, He prancing around the stage and did a Booty shaken! That explain why he got a good butt! Sweet! "Welcome 2 The Dawn!"

It has to be the beautiful ones, just for the funny screamin. "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

Let's Go Crazy is great, I like the dancing the band does at the start of the song, Prince's hip swiveling guitar solo, his playing of the piano with his feet then jumping off and doing a crazy scream into the mic. I love the screaming at the end of Beautiful Ones as well. The way the whole crowd is dancing/moving at the same time during Dez Dickerson's Modernaire is pretty amazing to watch. Sex Shooter is a good performance for obvious reasons

That is a great moment in the film, its also my fav. Also, when I saw the movie for the first time in the theater and heard the song break down, I knew a 12 Inch would be on the way since it appeared to be the studio version extended and broken down, rather than an altogether different sounding "live" version. I checked the record stores constantly and my hunch was right....there was eventually a 12 Inch. Andy is a four letter word.

I have to choose the sizzling Computer Blue and Darling Nikki performance. P and the Revolution at their raw best with that bass just kickin'. The other one is The Beautiful Ones, which is strikingly powerful and it just shows how many women loved Prince. Check me out and add me on:

I first saw this movie at Mann's Chinese at the premire. Vain, paligap, Hands and others can testify to the fact that I mentioned long before the PR 20th year dvd was to come out that not only was I there, but I'm actually on film at the premire. Anyway, the song Purple Rain is my fave in the movie. Largely cuz at the premire, folks where crying during that scene. I dig it cuz I love his solo so much. This may seem out of left field, but one of my favorite musical performances in PR is the scene where the male side of the Revolution is jamming to the extended (and still unreleased) version of Computer Blue. You hear it right before Prince walks into the club and asks where Wendy and Lisa are. The stripped down sound of it is mighty funky, and everytime they stop in the film, I wish they'd keep going.
