Prince's Earring In His Right Ear

The very first time I ever saw Prince was on "American Bandstand" in 1980. He had a big hoop earring in his right ear. On the "Prince" album, he also has a small stud in his right ear. During the "Lovesexy" era, I remember Prince sporting a hoop in his right ear also. On Andre Cymone's first album, "Livin' In The New Wave", he also has an earring in his right ear.

During the early 1980s, everyone always said that players wore their earring in their left ear and gay men wore their earring in their right ear. This was widely said throughout the 1980s. In the 1990s, men began wearing earrings in both ears but never just in their right ear only.

Of course, an earring, regardless of which ear it's in determines someone's sexuality but people do have a reason for wearing them. When I watch old movies from the 1970s, the pimps wore their earring in their right ear. Sweet Daddy from "Good Times" also wore his in his right ear. When I got from underneath my mother's rule and could do as I pleased, I had my right ear pierced and still wear an earring in my right ear because I want my sexuality to be questionable and mysterious to others and also it's a "slap in the face" "fuck you" fashion statement to those that don't like it.

I'm wondering what Prince's reasons were for his earring in his right ear.

Chris Rock asked P a question during a rare interview that went something like this. I am paraphrasing a lot btw.

How much of your ambiguous persona is really you and how much is for the cameras/public/etc?

Basically P told him that some of it was for "rock 'n' roll" and some of it is the true gemini that he is. I think he intentionally wanted to be ambiguous with his answer and seems pretty ambiguous most of the time. It's definitely deliberate.

I got my earring when I was 17 and I gotta admit that I 1st got it in my left ear, but it didn't feel right so I took it out that same day, went back and got it my right ear. It used 2 bug me a bit when people thought I was gay but since getting in2 Prince... I don't give a fudge! Some people r a trip, at my job it goes from 1 extreme 2 the other. Some think I'm gay or at least Bi but then I'm also banging every chick I talk 2. I wish they'd make up their mind lol (controversy is my anthem!)

I am confused about the whole earring deal. i too remembered that left ear was ok, but right ear meant you were gay.
but with men getting both ears pierced... I think it doesn't matter that much anymore.

Prince throw away his gold chain because his wrist was to heavy (I guess), his bodyguard miss to caught it, but a fan did !
The earwrap, I don't know, Prince just was shaking his head and something shinny drop down into the crowd, maybe nobody noticed this at all?

Maybe the guy who hoover the floor got this earwrap, or maybe one orger have it secretly? :p

Does Prince even still wear his earring? I've heard a few stories about him lecturing fans with tattoos and piercings. If he was to be at all consistent he'd have to take it out. But then, consistency and Prince have never met each other, so who knows.....

George Michael was rockin' hoop earrings in both ears back during his Wham! days...

I remember that! I spotted that immediately in the "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" video. Earrings or no earrings, I don't know why people didn't know about George because he was pure tuna in that video. lol

I noticed them right away too! I thought he was so cool for daring to wearing earrings in both ears. In fact, my mom bought me gold hoops like his for my birthday. Admittedly, as a 10 year old girl, they didn't look too out of place on me. smile I was so in love with him that I refused to believe he was gay for the longest time...andI swear he was married to that Asian woman in the I Want Your Sex video. shrug
