I loved his entrance for the 15 Dec 2003 show in Las Vegas. It didn't make the dvd (Lord only knows why).

Drum kit was lit up w/ green, blue and white lights. Prince was on drums (favorite thing of mine. And to begin with it.... drool He does his thing then...

He starts to spin out and in spins Sheila E. without missing a beat. She does her thing then starts to spin out and without missing a beat in spins John Blackwell.

The whole thing was WOW...the lighting made it larger than life...I still get goosebumps.

I was there too! That was a hot entrance. It was like he came out of nowhere when the lights shined on him. That should have been on the DVD.

The Musicology Tour when Prince emerged from the ground in that crate. The crowd went nuts.

that was pretty frikkin' cool, every single time i saw it. though after a few times, i was more excited to see what he was gonna be wearing than i was about the actual theatrics of the entrance. "ooh! baby blue fringe!" giggle

I was the same way. After the first show, it was like I would check for little things like which girl is gonna mess up Kiss this time or is he going to sing Call My Name this show.

I really liked the Musicology entrance in Detroit.
He came out of the floor with a blinding light and fog lifting him up similar to the P.R. tour in 85. Man that got everyone all freaked out. Great show memory! wink

That's my favorite also. I have a video of that tour and at the beginning you hear the drums from "Controversy". All you can see is a large flashing light shining through the smoke. It almost looked like a big flashing ball of fire. My sister was watching it with me and she said it looked like the opening gates at the entrance of Hell. lol Then you see Prince's shadow slowly rising to the top of the set by the blinds and the lights never come on until he swings down the pole at the beginning of "Let's Work".

Yup I have a 1999 tour vid too. It's the homecoming one. What a show! That flashing light is coming from the drum too! All praise to Princes dramtic ideas and to Roy Bennet for the lighting and the design of the stage! As it said somewhere in some book: Prince was so damn dramatic and dynamic, there was nothing left to do BUT make a movie!

I have it as well, but, it looked much scarier in person. I saw P twice on that tour, and each time, it TOTALLY was intended to look like he was coming from hell, with his shadow being the main thing u see from the fire and smoke (brimstones). He used the same concept again with his Purple Rain tour where he was coming up from hell.

I've never seen him in concert. sad But there's one video I have of him on the Controversy tour which begins with his gospel tune called "The Second Coming". Then after the song he kicks off the show with Uptown. May not be the best entrance, but it's my favorite. smile

Exactly! That's my pick as well, hands down!

yeah thats it, he also did the same entrance at a " Hit n Run" in 2000, not really an entrance but I thought it was cool at the ONA show he was already sitting at the piano playing when people were arriving

so does he appear before he comes out of the box in the big cloud of smoke? i didn't think so, but i didn't really look up at the ceiling before the show started or anything, he coulda been flying around up there on a glider or something.

i just didn't understand how you didn't consider the whole prince popping up on stage out of a cloud of smoke thing to be a stage entrance, when that's the first appearance he made on stage during those concerts. i figured maybe i missed something he did before the show started, like maybe a little hang-gliding demo or a trampoline act with zelaira by the merchandise table or something. shrug

Exactly. I think that was his last show on the tour when he returned home to Minneapolis. The Time was great on that show too. A friend of mine, that I met at a concert, made me a copy of that tape. I just wish he had included Vanity 6 so I would have the entire concert.

You just don't know how lucky you are to have lived in a major city where Prince returned every year. I was dying to see Prince back in those days. Prince came to my area in 1980 with Rick James (a concert that I had no one to take me to because I was too young) and never returned until 1997.

I really like what they did at Last years "Essence Fest" where the band came out in costumes and P was roller skating playing guitar.

A couple of days before we watched the Johnny Depp pirate movie so it was great synchronicity.

Am I the only one who owns the boot "You Belong To Prince" ? (Houston 9 December 1981)
It's the only boot of the Controversy-tour which contains the complete intro ...
and it's very obvious that the Controversy tour has the best stage entrance.

For those of you who do own the City Lights set (most of you I suppose):
no .. both discs do not contain the start of the concert!

I'm going with the SOTT tour. Saw him for the first time at the Frankfurt Festhalle in Germany. Now, although he stood there at the opening of SOTT, I'd forgotten about the band until they started descending the stairs.

Sign 'o'the times, outdoors in Utrecht the Netherlands, 1987.
Madhouse played before a huge curtain.
After Madhouse the waiting began.

From behind the curtain more and more smoke began to escape.
Then there was a louder and louder guitar solo (and even louder).
Then suddenly the drumbeat of sign o the times started, the curtain dropped and a huge purple cloud came from behind. The smoke bacame lighter and there he was, al alone playing that guitar. eek biggrin

I haven seen about 8 more shows i guess, it's never been better.

I saw him play at Jones Beach in NY for a
Jam Of The Year show.
The stage is built right on the edge of the beach
with the seats facing the water.
All the lights went down, the intro music kicked
in. You hear prince's voice a few times and then
a spotlight hits the water next to the stage
where Prince is perched on a boat! nod
It had pulled around from behind the stage
when the lights were down.
He had a wireless mike and as the boat was
heading toward the stage he was doing the
intro to JOTY.
I was like: oh shit he's comin in on a boat!
lol

cool Yeah! That wuz cool.
