I like the song and think it under-rated - but no one has ever satisfactorily explained why it is 'sold' rather than 'told'? 'sold' puts rather a cynical spin on it - as though he was saying the romance between him and Mayte was an act and 'sold' to the media and public. Though I suspect the proper interpretation is that the women is 'selling' the idea of a romance with her to Prince.

Another cynical line is:
"In spite of your desire 2 mold me"

And 'the real reason why Adam never left Eve' is never explained - personally I think it is because there WERE NO OTHER WOMEN AROUND to leave her for!

I think if it had been 'told' rather than 'sold' people would still be playing this song at their weddings.

Hiya mate, I was referring to The Greatest Romance...

Well, there are no 'official' live versions, if you know what I mean. Just a case of looking in the right areas. lurking Hope you find 'em.

I hated it when i first listened to it, now I realise there is some great songs there, Rave, The greatest Romance,Tangerine, Man O'War, Eye Love U, Strange But True, Prettyman.

My favourite being Strange but True, I love that synth work near the end of the song. turn that up to 10 everytime. headbang

I've never liked The Greatest Romance, it was like he was trying to hard to be mainstream and follow the musical trends of that time.

I can't recall anything around that time with that style/vibe/feel. Can you give me some examples of other songs/artists of that time that you are referring to?

I don't particularly like the entire Rave album that much
but I have always considered "Romance" a Prince classic..

It's just such a beautiful song with such nice melodies n
exquisite vocal delivery.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I always sleep on that track until the next time I hear it. I kinda "re-discover" it everytime I hear it. It really is good and quite possibly the best video he's ever done.

In the video the line about Adam & Eve is accompanied by a shot of a pregnant woman. Is that why Prince married Mayte? That's not the story they sold to us.

But if she did sell the romance to him like you say, then she did mold him and his body responded to her.

By the way, Adam could have found another wife the same place Cain did!

It is a twisted song. Reminds me of Diamonds & Pearls, which I've never had explained to my satisfaction (the whole boy or a girl part). The whole album is angry & depressed. An argument against the whole "suffering creates good art" argument. It's got good stuff on it, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty low on my list of favorites.

RealMusician

I have a problem with the chord progression in the verse, when the chords are moving chromatically downward - so far it's just beautiful, but then when it's time to go back to the chorus you're in a completely different key... Prince didn't figure out a modulation leading back to the original key (which you normally would do), instead he just went straight into it.

To me it sounds a little awkward - it's the same kind of feeling that I usually get about musicians/songwriters who doesn't really know what they're doing...
